Not sure if that is a fair critique of the Solo, the current boats are great to sail, ergonomic and stiff, the controls are powerfull, effective and at hand, the 3DL rig is extremely sophisticated, and works effectively over a wide range of conditions.  IMO this is the single hander that RS would have designed to fit in with the 200 and 400.

I don't think that the adoption of FRP sandwich or Mylar/3DL is resistant to change.

The problem for any manufacturer's class is how far you take cost out of the boat to get a worthwhile margin and hit your price points, inevitably the product is going to be compromised, particularly if you have half an eye on the beach boat market ...

The 300 is certainly a niche boat and Graeme's photo montage brought back plenty of memory's, but like the solo it is not a good sea boat and it's not popular enough to build in volume. As has been said it would be difficult to improve on IF that type of instability is what you want to build. It was designed to be more stable than it was so perhaps the best improvement would be to put some weight into it.

I am sure a modern solo is great but on a puddle. It's a poor boat in a seaway. Last a few months here before they give up or buy another boat  LOL

What is a good singlehander in a seaway?  I sail at Salcombe and have done numerous sea championships and I think it is a great boat, easy to sail upswing and rock solid downwind.

I'd quite like to have sailed my Solo on the sea, I reckon it would have been really good fun.

Sailing inside the salcombe bar ain't sea sailing and they wouldn't set races outside in rough conditions.

Best fast unarig on the sea is a blaze or Supernova.............................

I got to say simon, I think the solo is pretty good on the salty stuff.  I also loved sailing the 300 on the sea, so rewarding when you got it right!

Contender, on the sea, preferably down west somewhere like Looe.
Proper waves, proper sailing.
