Good idea.  You can't lose on 1058, even in an original L3k.  But maybe you'll prove me wrong  Wink

Despite being very clever and light I can't help thinking it is rather ugly. I can't quite put my finger on it but the mixture of the boom angle and the boxy looking hull are all together quite wrong. Perhaps the white sail and hull are a bit too bright and make it look more boxy than it is? Doesn't make me want to go out and spend 5 or 6 grand on it. The D-0 on the other hand... that looks like a nice bit of kit which I could go and splash some cash on purely on looks.

If I could be arsed, I'd love to look back at your last 600 ish posts and see if you have ever said anything positive about RS?

Oh and I currently own an RS200... and before both of these I had a 700... and way before that I even had an RS supplied Optimist!

I might be called "laser193713" but I haven't sailed one for years. I actually quite liked it... especially because I didn't have to pay for it!  LOL

My point about the aero is simple. The RS100 sold in the numbers it did early on because people liked how it looked. Some sailed it for a little while and realised that they werent fit enough or good enough. Then the people who couldn't keep it upright moaned because they couldn't get back into it after the 15th capsize of the day. I sold mine because I had to move for work and couldn't keep it. Once settled in I bought the 200 as a project boat as it needed a little bit of love.

So that's my story. Don't accuse me of being negative towards the brand because I've been fairly loyal to them. I just don't like what they have done with the Aero.

All fair points. The RS100 is a demanding boat and became a little more so between prototype and production.

Its a difficult challenge between aspiration and reality when people design these boats. We may all aspire to sail a 49er in 25 knots, but very very few can. The manufacturers can always up the horsepower to excite people, but ultimately it has a short selling life. The nice thing about both the new boats is that they don't appear to have been overdone.

Looks are subjective and even after 6 years the punk looks very striking, some of the extremeness in the bow has been reduced on the Zero, which (no offence Dan) makes it look even better. It has the sort of effect that the 300 did on launch - you just looked at it because it was very different to everything else around and thought woah.

The aero on the other hand does have the RS look to it that we all know and there are flat sections such as the long foredeck, but I think that, plus a decent helping of carbon, is how they can build it that stiff at that weight. I thought it looked good 'in the flesh' at the show, but it is more conventional looking than the Dzero. Of course the D-one has had more than a couple of negative iGRF comments about its 'looks', but it looks pretty good on the water and wouldn't stop me buying one because it does the job of being a fast sailing dinghy very well.

Of course we should remember that as humans (most of us anyway) are pre-programmed to like curves(!)

As for seeing an aero or Zero startling against a similarly well sailed Laser,  both boats will of course be better and faster and that is a fact. That doesn't mean that either will ever sell a 10th of the volume of Laser or indeed out last it, but they certainly should. Big smile

My design brief for a new single hander would be simple -

Must go faster on every point of sail as the wind increases.
Must be a monohull.

At the moment I would guess this leaves just the Contender, 300, 600, 700, Blaze, I Moth, I Canoe, Musto, D-one.

That's interesting. I have it from more than one source that something like 40kg was taken off the weight of the 300 between prototype and production. Did the same thing happen with the 100? That 40kg completely changed the 300's handling characteristics. The original intention of the 300 was to be a modern Laser but it failed in that regard - it is a completely different beast (thankfully).

One would hope that RS have learned their lessons with the Aero and it is a bit more forgiving.
