she's in Davy Jones's locker... along with the 50 USD of credits I had with Xtranormal.
They didn't even have the good grace to transfer it to bit coin, or Live Jasmin tokens.

I didn't manage to photo(video?)-bomb this interview. Although I do feature in the RYA summary video a few times...

I remember back in the day just getting your name in Y&Y was big deal, everyone read Y&Y back to front... look at the boats for sale that you'll buy when you're big and grown up first, then read Clubs and Classes to see if you could spot someone's name you recognised- especially the older kids who'd moved on to other classes. Just seeing your own name, maybe once a season, was enough to justify an annual subscription higher up your Christmas list than LA Gear trainers.
Now we get to photobomb Y&Y and RYA videos on a routine basis.... life has changed immeasurably with technology and engineering. Maybe not always for the better. Fortunately boats like this one and the Aero will be reassuringly familiar to those who grew up without all that overly-technical and technique dependent bullsh*t that's made aspirational dinghy racing a little too elite in recent decades. I was chatting to someone the other day about sailing the Aero, I could tell he was being totally sincere when he said it just felt like 'dinghy sailing' should feel. I'm looking forward to sailing both of these... as Dan says in his interview, the timing couldn't be better to rediscover some mojo for this sport.

If they really have managed "no harder-but faster and more fun" - especially the smaller Aero, seeing as waterline length is king - then I agree that it could put a boost into the sport. Will they kill other classes in the process? There are a few I can see as being very vulnerable.

I doubt they'll 'kill' other classes... but they might ignite some resurgent interest again.
Let's be honest, most people will still buy a cheap laser for at least the next few years, but we only have to look to the Solo to see that £4k for a relatively old boat is a bit of barrier to entry for those switching over from Lasers, whereas £2.5k buys them something comparatively competitive if they stick with a Laser, and it will probably a fair bit newer and shinier, especially with the inevitable new sail they will buy.
If these two new classes depreciate at standard (and healthy) rates, then £2-2.5k second hand boats will be available inside of 3 seasons.... that has surely got to be good for club sailors. |

You can get a club competitive Laser with full XD kit and a decent sail for half that (less if you are in the right place at the right time). Until the new classes get this critical mass and have second hand boats at that sort of money then they are going to struggle. Personally I am tempted by a switch to the Solo as this is easily the fleet with the best turnouts at the moment but I don't have the moolah to buy a competitive boat. I know you can get older wooden boats that are the 'right' shape and have been looked after for less but I then don't have the facility to keep them well looked after so plastic is the only way forward for me....

I love it, looks great. But i cant help thinking the helm could do with a bucket load of kicker. Cant wait to get my arse in one and give it a blast. We have the beginnings of a local fleet so could get some real close club racing this year!!

Absolutely, I am a world champion arm chair sailor. Let's be fair it's a new boat, with some final adjustments to be made before production. So in my opinion it looks pretty sweet. I can't wait to get my arse wet in one! |
