You're still missing it Simon. That 107 is *NOT* a measurement of the sail area, its just a formula result, just like 12m Americas Cup racers were not 12m long. I think the real sail area is probably in the 130sqft region, but I'd want to measure an actual set of sails using the standard ISAF method of measuring real area to be sure.

Yes Jim I am getting it! I now understand that there is quite considerably more sail area than 107 sq ft. It always seemed to me to be smaller than the Ent at, nominally 113 sq ft. I wonder what the actual sail area of an Ent is.

It would indeed be an interesting exercise to measure properly the Merlin Sails

I wondered why the baseball kept getting bigger. Then it hit me.

You're welcome to measure my sails any time you like if you think its a good use of your time. I really could not care as I know that they are beautiful, responsive, well designed and built boats which are as good to sail as to look at.

As far as sail measurements go, our rules work for us and b***** the rest of you. The rules give us the distinctive mainsail shape, the small jib which is good for female & smaller crews, a responsive rig that works over a large wind range and sail well on all sorts of water from the open sea through to narrow rivers.

I can but only agree with sugmeister and peaky that they are beautiful boats.

However, we seem to have moved a long way from the topic of PY Lag that this thread is about.

IME most of the one design classes quote the area reasonably accurately. I remember thinking the Fireball quoted area looked small, and I found a set and measured them carefully and found it was pretty much right, rather to my surprise.

The Laser's oft quoted 7.06 is just the triangle area. IIRC it is about 7.7 in reality.

+1
I could add that the Merlin rule does allow some experimentation with Main:jib ratios, and a slightly smaller taller rig which is still used on rivers.
As I understand it Jon Turner is still experimenting with a slightly smaller jib than most people use, with results that would please most people, but somewhat short of his heyday in the class a couple of decades ago.
But most people opt for the default dimensions and worry about other stuff, like racing.
