My single handed sailing isn't my strongest point, but I've always strived to keep at least my upper body weight ahead of the CB and it is only when the wind strength is such that I'm forced aft that my troubles start.
Obviously it's not a problem off wind, but surely upwind doesn't everybody try to stay ahead of it, or at the very least opposite it, don't you start getting weather helm if you sit too far back up wind? (I don't know this, I've just always tried to stay ahead of it as I would on a board.) Edited by iGRF - 04 Mar 14 at 9:34am |

You might be ahead of it when it is in its "down" position, but if you look at where the case comes to inside the cockpit, if you are sat at the front end of the side deck, you will be level with the board, and the slot in the deck will be empty of board. I'm sure in light winds, bums slide onto the foredeck, which in an OK is very long. The OK's board is also raked aft when down, I believe, so will be further aft than it seems at deck level.

What a strange attitude. People buy the Buzz because of what it is: ie Tough and well built, family friendly (Husband and wife, mum and daughter, kids and their friends etc etc all able to enjoy sailing it) with a GREAT Class Association, ALL spares plus endless authoritative and friendly free advice readily available through a fantastic supplier, great speed and excitement (just look for photos and videos of it on the water) whilst still so stable that you can furl the headsail and enjoy your picnic lunch in comfort AND (for now at least) incredibly affordable - a really good Buzz can be had for well under £2k and a brand new boat ready for the water is only £7k. Next thing you know MR IRGF will be suggesting a Wayfarer should be made into a hydrofoil boat to make it a bit quicker – once again completely missing the point. No, if you are after ‘out and out speed’ then there are a number of ‘out and out racers’ designed for that purpose. Instead Stuart and Zoe have it 100% right. The Buzz does what it is meant to do and there are very many current and past Buzz sailors fully behind them when they say they are NOT going to "screw" either the thriving Class Association, Buzz sailors generally or the Buzz itself. |

Spares did get a bit tricky to get hold of for a while and perhaps that is why there have been some fallow times. But that is no longer the case with everything right up to a brand new boat now readily available. These were, however, a fantastically successful class back in the Topper days with hundreds of boats built and, because they are so well built, many are just waiting to have their cracked and hardened covers peeled off, a quick jet wash and the broken rudder cam or missing block or whatever replaced before they are once again be ready to go! And anyone who wants to find out for themselves, first hand, just how much fun they are only needs to contact the Class Association where members are ready and willing to give them a warm welcome and take them for a trial sail. So why not give it a go. |
