Just a quick note to thank everyone who visited our stand at the Dinghy Show. It was great to meet you all and hear your views of the D-Zero. I am looking forward to meeting some of you again in June when you will be collecting your new boat
I will also try to be at as many of our roadshow days as possible but will miss some due to overseas commitments to attend regattas. We are in the throes of putting dates together for the roadshows and they will be published soon. We will also have demo boats based in the North, Midlands and the South for those who are not able to get to the roadshows when they are in your area.![]() |

I suspect given Devoti have probably the most extensive knowledge of un-stayed rig technology in the dinghy arena, it will have quite a wide weight range. The rig looked like you could flatten it off massively. In my opinion once a few final things are refined it will be a super slick rig for the money!

Hmm, not wishing to pee in anyones soup, but that designer bloke who built it for himself?
Skinny fecker him, he looks closer to the optimum weight homo sapiens was meant to be...

I think as 85kg would be a very nice target weight for a proper weight loss programme (involving the utter humiliation of being prodded, poked and weighed in with fat girls every friday), that 85kg should be optimum weight for both the RS Aero and the Devoti Zero.

I thought the DZero on the stand looked great. It's worth noting though that it isn't a production boat - they said the foils wouldn't be carbon, there would be a different bailer arrangement and a different rudder stock. Probably other changes too.
I would consider one if I knew the real helm weight range. The problem with ultra-light boats is that the helm is a higher percentage of the all-up sailing weight, so being the right weight is really critical. I know they said 70-90 but so does almost every other singlehander. And obvs lighter is better in light winds, heavy in heavy, etc, but there's usually a competitive sweet spot in reality. Presumably that sweet spot must be at least Laser level (same basic hull dimensions, bigger and more powerful sail?) But the sail must exert less turning force than say a Rooster 8.1 (lower aspect) or Phantom (smaller size). So what do you think? 82Kgs mid-point? |

My boat of the show, the D Zero, and every bit as good value as I supposed. High quality at very reasonable price.
I fancy the Aero will be more than a match planing downwind, with its lighter weight and chines, but if I had to choose, I'd take the D Zero. Of course, what I'd really like is to have both at my disposal for the day, and swap round every half hour....

Don't be afraid. I never once mentioned a price war or, conversely, a cartel. I would imagine that both suppliers would be keen to optimise the margin on their respective new product, whilst minimising the amount of cash left on the table; isn't that what successful selling is all about...?

Jim Couldn't say really, little things make so much of a difference. Take the supernova, in MK 1 form it was not great on the sea if it was rough, as could fill up. The Mk 2 open transom now means its brilliant on the sea. Some conditions will suit each boat differently. All I can say is if you put Dan, Jo Richards or Nick Craig in any of them they would be parked at home before most of us crossed the line ![]() Looking at the aero, it has a higher freeboard, which could work in its favour in rougher conditions and then you have the dilemma of different sail sizes. The DZero has a very fine nose to go through waves, I assume, so it may be great in waves. At this point no one knows. I think all these boats will all be within 50 points on the PY scale, all self drain, all will have well worked hiking positions. An epoxy Nova probably has a good handicap at 1071 now and may fall a little over the next few years - lets say 1062. Dan sailed the punk off 1050 and did well, but he is way above average PY, but lets say thats fair. Aero has yet to be seen, but it is very light and was a fun sail back in prototype form last year. I am all in favour of simple light carbon rigs, but in building conditions, I have yet to sail anything that gives the sort of power control available with an 'old fashioned' adjustable forestay on a piece of tin ![]() However, I do think that a simple twice a season, una rig only, 'lets go and race on scratch' with overall top three and then perhaps a top three by boat - with compulsory drinks and food on the saturday night- would be brilliant. Oh and as always Nick Craig would win in his Oppy...... |

So Simon, given you've sailed the Aero proto - at best guess, could these boats race scratch and we could reasonably expect the better sailor to win over the water?

Similar sail size to the Supernova - fractionally larger main but semi soft and a fathead. Fractionally shorter, but similar width so doesn't sound too much to me.
Supernova (epoxy) is 50kg hull and PY of 1071.
