I suspect the reason a sailor of Dan's calibre would design the D-Zero with ( nicely recessed ) deck cleats for the mainsheet is the same reason that ( 9 times ) Laser World Champion Robert Scheidt fits the optional mainsheet cleats to the deck of his Laser.

Are you sure about that? I would imagine you have seen him sailing a worlds or Olympic charter boat where they were fitted by laser. Happy to be proven wrong. Also I was not sl*gging off the cleats, if there was a recess on the laser more people would fit them.

I like the look of the devoti, it is a much more desirable item than the RS, the RS has the benefit of the rig options though. Different markets entirely... I hope there is room for both, although I doubt it. I do stand by my statement that the RS brand is becoming stale, perhaps diluted, mainly because of the general purpose side of things which could do with their own identity. I do worry for them currently, its tough out there!

Yep, I've watched him use his deck cleats repeatedly upwind, in breeze, and for tacking, all on his own boat.

I've never been good enough to sail alongside him at a Worlds or Olympics, but I'd be surprised if he suddenly changed his routine when supplied with charter boats, also supplied with deck cleats fitted.

Some very good Laser sailors like the cleats for upwind sailing in light winds.

Graeme have a word mate, you are getting sloppy in your old age!  You will not catch any fish with sh*tty bait like that!  No one knows apart from a limited select few.....just chill out and wait for the show.  I don't think you will be disappointed from what I have seen of the boat so far.

Now where is the 2014 py thread?  Just come back from a bike ride and heard the phantom has had a drubbing again!  Confused

The number of people on here questioning the pricing policy of both Devoti and RS whilst claiming to work in Sales is, frankly, shocking.

I suspect that come 09:55 on Saturday both companies will have several prices ready to hoist, with a spy suitably positioned on the other's stand equipped with a mobile phone.

n'ah this off the clock.... and nothing wrong with a bit of fishing exercise.  Given the interest in this boat category, I'd have thought a bit a slippage of pricing policy wouldn't be a bad idea, not that I'm suggesting cartel like behaviour.

I'm afraid the world doesn't work like that. If they are trying to match the price of the other into some sort of pathetic price war then they are doing it very wrong. Both companies will have (or should have) a good idea of the cost of the boat to them and also the margins they need to work to in order to make it a viable product. I expect the price of these two boats to be very different. More than 10% difference anyway. The build price for the devoti will be higher, no doubt about it.

Both parties know what they are doing when it comes to pricing their boat. The 100 vs D1 wasn't a price war, so why should this be. What I don't agree with is the way the boats (particularly the RS) is being marketed. Dropping some loose articles onto a few news sites and some sneak pictures in a forum without even a mention of it on their own site is bonkers! Perhaps both boats are being rushed to market because of the deadline of the dinghy show. The last boat to make that mistake was the Rooster Project X which I haven't heard a peep from yet! Perhaps there is a lesson there....

Their costs are important but you should price to the market ... the consumer defines the value.

What level of value the consumer attributes to each product will define the price that the seller can demand.

No-one buys on price ... they buy on value.

I would no necessarily want to be the cheapest of the two either ... price also communicates, we are programmed to believe that highest price is the best quality ... usually it is but not always.

I would expect the D-O to be more expensive because I think it will be a Devoti quality product and as such I would expect to pay a higher price than an RS ... which is more of a volume brand ...

Audi 'v' Ford perhaps ....
