We get so many posts on here saying how class racing is the be all and end all, so as soon as a club does what it can to push sailors into specified classes what happens...

Simple really, people want bigger fleets to sail in but I don't think it is the responsibility of the club to ban people from sailing what they want to in order to achieve this. That is the wrong way to fix that problem, if that's what they're actually trying to achieve. I suspect it isn't though...

The foiling Laser isn't intended to be a racing class per se and certainly not to attack the Laser; it's intended to be a fun bit of kit for people to use when conditions warrant. The Radial, fully flattened, is used so that aerodynamic drag can be reduced when foiling, not because of power issues; the foils actually seem to make the boat more stable, more like a bigger boat, when it's seahugging, as is the case with Moths. It may not be a case of trying to turn people away, but instead trying to bring in more people by ensuring that classes get critical mass and therefore attract even more people.
As I understand it, in days of yore many clubs would only permit boats of specific classes to race with them. I have seen mentions of some that had a "menagerie" class for odd-bods but had a limit on the number of boats that would be allowed to race in the class. Once the class was full you'd have to either buy a boat from an approved class and race it in the class, or wait until someone dropped out of the menagerie class. Most clubs where I used to live would only allow certain classes to race and that city (Sydney) had arguably one of the best dinghy scenes in the world, because if you bought a racing dinghy you had a very high chance of being able to find 10-20 boats of the same class to race against each weekend, with all the bonuses of good racing, lots of support and information, etc. Edited by Chris 249 - 26 Feb 14 at 2:09am |
