Must be a bit of a surprise for the last 50 years of N12 sailors to hear that...

I am only going on what I have been told. I have never set foot in a 12 (as I am far too heavy to crew one and don't fancy all that faffing around at the back.

Have just expressed an interest with rs for a test sail. If things go to plan, they are thinking about taking the boat out in a road show to take to clubs.

Paul. I suspect I know who you chatted to. Gybing some 12's was always tricky, the ones that tended to go bow down , such as a foolish or baggy. Having said that, we did not tend to back off the gybe till a good f5. The foils have made a big difference as you can trim the bow up and eliminate the nose dive, and the slight upwards slant on the wings give more roll stability as they try to resume level flight. We were giving in 29 knots in the burton cup last time round, well not every lap. It's interesting the 12 is the only class to have done this. See James Mays programme on model gliders for a laypersons explanation.

A foil will probably have an effect on any boat. But I would only expect to see them on a development boats, as it's cheaper to add stability by de tuning the hull or adding length.

They have other effects such as flattening the stern wave, lifting the stern to reduce displacement. This also means that you can have a much thinner waterline at the stern. The DCB has virtually no stern buoyancy, it sinks if you stall the foil if sat at the back. It planes more like a motor boat balanced on the rudder and a planing surface further forward. As Daniel said they are expensive. Almost as much as a decent second hand 12.

As for GRF. A 12 with a foil would have worked well for his diminutive size. And he could have even tried his experiments with more like minded encouraging people. Though we did ban tunnel hulls in the 70's. Though the boat would probably have scared him.

Perhaps they could do it like the old radio 1 road shows. Maybe get an old dj to host.

I hear D.L.T. could do with work now. LOL But the dancing girls might have to be careful. Allegedly. Smile

By creeping up behind me in the dark and going boo! ?

Can't think of any other way anything twelve foot long with sails on it would have me quaking in my boots.

But I would like to talk a bit more about this, perhaps in some other thread, I came across one when I was searching for clarification on what an N12 foil did, maybe I'll bump it up if I can find it again it was an old one, Merlinboy and Turnturtle were yakking away..

Jim. Think I'm safe. No court order in force. All the allegations are out in the public domane already.
Will check with yellowwelly when he comes back on line, he knows a lot more about this sort of thing than me. Smile
