There are two tick, there's a new RS Zero as well, hence the excitement, spoilt for choice, not just one, but two new, might even be affordable, boats to get excited about, and I think it's going to be a very tough choice between them by the look of what we know so far.. |

So clearly what we need is a comparitve review of the D-Zero, RS-Zero, Lasr and Solo. By a typical, net salary paying, weekend punter.

mildew, buckling, leaking, cracking, re-sticking, self tapping, stanley knifing... the occurrence of which is I agree, greatly increased by beach launching; but it still remains a a very real eventuality for all slot gaskets. I've seen grown men with upturned fireballs taking it very seriously and ironing them and using hairdryers on slot gaskets.... I really don't want to sound like Grumpf, but seriously... how ghey is that? It's one thing being all metrosexual with your Morphy Richards and Vidal Sassoon in the comfort of your own home, but down the sailing club in front of your mates? No way, give me a daggerboard every time thanks.

Slot gaskets are not a problem unless you are stupid enough to drag your boat about on the stones ... only a complete muppet would do that ... ![]() |

Did you have a go in the Punk up at the FOM toby?
I wasn't in it long enough to make a judgement, but the way it shot off the start line out from under me with that Dan the man driving it and the cut of the sail he was using kind of convinced me it was something a bit special. Who even cares about Solo's and Lasers, they're already out there, everybody knows what they are like don't they? So the great unknown is the Jo Richards offering, I had to google him, he was the Vortex guy wasn't he? Edited by iGRF - 12 Feb 14 at 11:34am |

All that will prove is which is nicer for a blast... I can put that running order down now without even sailing the top two on the list, even then I've got a fair idea already. The long term feeling of ownership, who else sails them, how they are treated by the RYA, whether the events are fun or not, whether the depreciation is in keeping with expectation... that will come with experience. Or in my personal case, observation of others experience. I wonder who's got the cojones to put a deposit down and be one of the first guinea pigs? I wish you luck whomever you are.

touche!
I may yet own another one, or another alternative feminine colour- WTS. It's worth remembering that unless your boat has some pretty strong antipodean heritage, then our custom has them as female, not male. I don't think it sounds antiquated to look at a nice boat and say she's a thing of beauty, in fact I think that adds something over and above the blandness of say my windsurf or snow boards- which are just toys- products for consumers. So the question really is do you like your women (and boats) to look feminine, or is all that stick-on carbon masculinity we've seen on recent boats harbouring some rather more closet desires in the design department? I don't want any of my future boats to look like they've been through the Halford's body shop - that's rather naff if you ask me.

I had a quick go in light winds. 'Twas lovely.
The comment that sticks in my mind was dan describing his design aim (before I sailed it) as "wanting the boat to fit like a glove". And it does - although it's about 14ft long it feels like something much shorter so you get that sense of dominance over the boat that a short boat brings, with the benefits of a longer waterline. I think this is becasue it is so light and quite narrow.
Dan makes any boat go fast, but baselining off a Laser should make having a stab at the PY relatively straightforward.
Jo Richards also designs very innovative boats - the Vortex, Vago, Full Pelt, DCB N12 and Pico. If I had to speculate based on zero (geddit?) knowledge I would guess that the RS will be built more around a price point to entice Laser owners (more basic carbon mast?) and the Devoti up to a standard. But that could be complete rot.

Historically in a head to head the market has decicided after any initial hype has died down the Devoti makes better boats than RS.
Both the MPS and D-1 seem to have fended off challenges to their innovative designs from wannabes.
