Having badgered Dan quite a lot about it over the last few months, I'm really looking forward to seeing the finalised boat at the show. The hull in the video is the original Punk one, but it looks like the rig is the halyard version? It'll be very interesting how it compares with the RS, Solo and Laser in terms of price, performance and quality.

That was my thoughts exactly, it needs collaboration at manufacturing/brand level. Follow the Solo model... hulls, foils, sails, spars... all from different suppliers marketing as a collective. It's essentially a box class isn't it?

Yes, but the days of everyone stitching and glueing mirror Dinghies together in the garage is long gone for the majority. GRP is nasty smelly stuff. No one has much time anymore so they need someone that can deliver them a shiny new boat and always be there to send them bits when they break them. Nothing wrong with building your own and I would quite fancy the Shaw 3.7 if only I wasn't a fraction
over the design weight and as nimble as a rhino.

Setting up a class without manufacturer support would be a tall order without a pretty keen sponsor .... people are not keen on volunteering any more ...

Classes come from sailors, not manufacturers, if a group of us decided to set up our own billy no mate box class then race each other, that's it, game set and match, it would be down to us who sailed, and if we wanted to make it a Pro Am or have multi rig options, then that also would be up to us.
Not that I would have the first clue as to who is a Pro and who is an Am, it was a very blurred line back in the days when I had to give up being an Olympian because I was more pro than am, even though I worked five and a half days a week as a printer. Edited by iGRF - 11 Feb 14 at 4:01pm |

Sounds awesome, but f*ck the SMOD people... they are what ruined the last RS boat, one launched with a massive wind range and multiple rigs, spiralled into a PY nightmare and divided the class because people couldn't cope with opening their minds up to the possibilities. ![]() A box class could also encourage home builds (Farr 3.7 sans trapeze anyone?) and you could even work in a legacy option to offer a very low cost of entry- the Laser with the Rooster 8.1 rig seems the obvious candidate. The aim being to get folks on the water- racing each other - but with a relaxed, mellow vibe that encourages competition and cooperation... go watch a spin class, a Le Jog or a group military fitness programme, this is the future of leisure activities- they are growing, no one is shutting them down in favour of fish murderers. Anyway, I now understand that the box rumour has no legs, these boats are quite separate. Shame. Rumour dead.

I'm guessing the show guide might have gone to print before the guys at Devoti were 100% sure they could get one there.
Sounds like careful planning, and at least they are not 'over promise, under deliver'... which is a good start imho. Anyway, if it's there I'm sure there'll be plenty of photos and vid-snips.

Maybe it is a new box class after all, and we could have the D-Zero, the RS-Zero, the O-Zero from Ovington, the R-Zero from Rondar. Maybe Coca Cola could sponsor the new class. It would take a massive mind shift for the SMOD people though for it to really happen.
