I sail a plank myself, of course, but designed before they thought of making the mast fall over, and they gave you a bit of wood at the back to steer with. Most inefficient, and very, very slow compared, but like the windsurfer, fun in a blow but less so in the light, and more fun playing than racing. The above comment was tongue in cheek, of course, but your answer did throw up some things about the marketing of dinghies which I have to admit are crap. I guess it costs more to have dinghies ready to take away, so maybe apart from in the world of Rotomould, difficult to achieve, but it would be nice.

Of course it does- especially when everything is in competition not cooperation.  Especially against a backdrop of lost class racing- it's no surprise that decent Solos sell well, once you get over the jokes about the demographic and blunt bow, it does offer proper racing at a lot of clubs.  

And I don't type that guilt free- I've been as guilty as anyone for being partisan towards classes, even though I've never had a commercial interest in any of the boats I've sailed, beyond protecting my own investment anyway.  

Box rules seem to be the way forward in competitive sailing- they are in catamarans and windsurfers - and the vibe is lot more chilled out from casual observation.  Maybe there's a place for that for dinghies- grandfathering former classes.  An umbrella class for RS300s and low riders could be a starting point I guess....

I'd say there is  lot less variety in hull shapes in cats and boards than in sailing dinghies - lets face it, on paper, a Wayfarer and ISO aren't that different as far as a box rule would see them - similar length, similar width - probably similar weight, too...

I used to have some great races with a lowrider Moth a few years back at BCYC. I was quicker upwind and he was quicker down, but pretty even overall.

I collected 'Mojo' today after a rather hectic week last week put pay to any sailing jaunts.   It went on the roof and I was able to travel at the national speed limit, in the outside lane when overtaking and wasn't charged double to go through the toll road.... bliss.

It's now safely tucked up in the garage waiting for the wind to softening up a bit.  Looking at the forecast it's unlikely I'd get out on it this weekend, not to worry, I've got an 85L shortboard that I haven't tried yet and that's good for 40 knot gusts....  LOL

It is possible to build a dinghy that makes things that easy? Trapeze off a narrow, lightweight hull (no racks or massive flare) that will easily fit on the car roof and be carried by one person. Fairly small rig (light and narrow, so no need of massive power) with 2 piece mast and simple controls. Yes, the lack of righting moment would keep absolute speed down, but it would be worth it for the ease of use.

In fairness I think both the Punk and RS (50?) are targeting ease of transport.  As does the Hoot of course.  At 50kg, I could car top a D-One too... so I'm being a little cheeky here, but it is nice not to buy a load of steel to sit in a trailer park for most of the year, only to be dragged out once in a blue moon to find it's got a puncture or some pikey's nicked the mast support and O-clip.
