No no no - some of us like handicap racing, we want to sail the boat of our choice, and don't give a damn about series results or PY. To me, the only thing that matters is having a good race with whoever/whatever boat happens to be well matched to me on that particular day.

Agreed.    The other major failing of your plan Simon, is what you do with your youth and junior sailors?

Make that one less of one of those because I sure as hell wouldn't bother getting in the van to go and sail one...

And somehow you expect your Fireball/Laser 2/3000 sailors to either sail a Vision or to jump into an 800? The 800 might be easier than a 49er, but it really isn't a boat you can sail without putting in lots of hours.

Touche on the yoof boat, but Handicap racing is never like one design and despite being made of washing up bowls, I've had some fine racing in our club visions against some very talented sailors. so lets think what has been the best racing I have had over the years………
J24's, 707's, 27oods, Lasers all strict one designs.

Of course always fun to go for a blast in a showboat, but if you really like racing there is only one option - fleet racing. We regularly put 40+ boats on the water but are lucky if 3 are the same. Its racing, sure, but in reality its just you against the clock avoiding other craft and no-one can say that is real racing.

Nope, fleet racing is crap when you are forced into a boat you either don't enjoy sailing, or don't even fit into properly. PY racing, while not great, at least lets you sail something you want to sail, and therefore its real racing as you are competing against one another even if the results can be skewed by conditions, etc. However if you are in the wrong boat then I would say that fleet racing is not "true racing" as you cannot compete on an even footing. None of it is right, its what suits the individual.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

Sorry, thats tosh  Big smile plenty of good one design boats that are good to sail.
Might as well sail on your own lake, hope you enjoy it….

People who love handicap racing are insecure in their ability to compete boat on boat. Lets them feel better than they are LOL

No, it's whether sailing your boat of choice is more important to you than being in a fleet. Each to his own. At my club, fleet would mean Laser or Solo, neither of which appeals enough to tempt me away from handicap.

So you think it's true that one design fleet racing is rubbish?

Wow, you boys have been eating to many special cakes. Or of course all the worlds best sailors are wrong.

Unless of course you are the worlds best sailors?
