With things like the Punk, the RS 50 or whatever it's called, the new Vortex rebuild, I don't think I'd give a reworked 4000 a second look, certainly not worth walking by the Alto stand to get to, there were rumours of something new coming from them not so long back a hiking edition, not sure how certain it is, now a hiking Alto that'll be competition to RS400's..

I think the main point is to get old 4000s racing again to start with, the ones that are tucked away at clubs not being used. If you have parts and sails available then it makes things a lot easier...

Cant argue with that but when you look at the transformation of the Streaker and the Graduate by Rooster I think the end product could be really good.  From the article clearly some discussion has already occurred to which no-one seems to be aware. I don't think the 4000 gets anywhere near the 29er or similar but its easy to sail compared to a 29er. Looking at the 4K forum they seem to be sailed more in handicap RTC currently where they are looking to ease their PY !! |

I think GRF you must be referring to the Vision sailors who could not work out why their boat was so slow and the fact that visions often go faster without the kite up. They put their vision sails on an AltO with AltO rig and were able to out-sail two well sailed 200s. They did of course swing the pole. There are no plans to have a hiking AltO. It is far too good as a two person single trapeze boat. While it has not been a big seller, no new owner has yet sold their AltO |

I don't see any shortage of parts and sails so I don't think that's what has been holding back the 4000 over all these years.
When the boat was fairly new a batch of 6 was shipped out to Dubai and I raced one for a season in 1996, primarily because of the other crews who were sailing them at the time. The weight certainly took some of the joy out of what would have been a great design for the short chop of the Gulf, and the systems never seemed very well sorted, with masses of friction, but the enduring memory I have is of the effort required to haul the boat up the ever so gently sloping beach of Jebel Ali Sailing Club.
4-tonner indeed.

Lets guess at the real price to deliver a racked double hander which is going to have to be epoxy at least to get weight out of it - £10-12k.
Not the best design in its day, sailed one about half a dozen times and never thought it great at the time. 5k and 4k were so heavy. Best of that era was probably the Buzz. The 2k on the other hand remains a good club boat and a couple of new ones already at my club. Very nice update and seem to go perfectly well.

I'd agree with all of that Simon, but I have to say I've enjoyed racing the AltO against the 4Ks at various open events over that last year. Never sailed one myself, but those that are in them seem to thoroughly enjoy them, race hard, and are a nice bunch ashore (special mention to the pairing that got smashed with me at the Medway Regatta on that local Real Ale!).
It'll be interesting to see what happens, as currently it's a boat I'd seriously consider for 2-up racing on a budget. |
