Oh boy.  Triple fecked.  Horses will financially ruin you.  They make dinghy sailing look sooooo cheap and simple.  Your  sh*t shoveling days will soon be replaced by working more & more to pay for it all.

+1 to that, one nag cost me enough, but plural? Apply the inverse square law to your finances.

I had a chum, quite well off until he had to put his horse through college..

well we've only got the one horse at the moment- another pony is probably imminent this spring for my eldest (5 y.o.) and the youngest just loves being around the stables and lead reign walks.... so not looking good; but if that's their thing then I'll find the time and money to make it happen- as best I can anyway and if that means sailing old windsurf kit once in a blue moon and not drifting around in a 10-20k dinghy at the duck pond every week... well so be it, they're well worth it.

many moons ago I had a wife with a horse affliction, and by way of compensation, I was allowed to try my hand at motorcycle racing. this is not a cheap sport, as you might imagine, but even so I was unable to match the prodigious spend on vets' fees and various equine paraphernalia.

Oh... you have my sympathies.   If you've a daughter into ponies you are so fecked.

Two daughters and a wife into them..... I understand that once they get to teenage years and find their old dad lurking around talking about boats and boards on an iPad avoiding the sh*t shovelling duties, my time may suddenly free up and I can go club sailing every weekend, or windsurfing at th coast, or dribbling into a warm beer at the wetherspoons... Whatever it is that old people do when they reach their mid forties....

Ha! Under the thumb James! Best thing I ever did was get my wife a horse. Free to go sailing whenever I like now. I made it VERY clear from the start that I wouldn't be doing any of the shovelling, not unless she helped me pack up the boat whenever I did an open.  LOL

Too true - if my wife's horse had been a boat/car etc it would have been written off long ago. Trouble is, they get so attached to the things...

the sNAG in the plan is what to do with the girls... anyway, I'm not bitter about the horses.  It makes a lot more sense to do country sports around here than it does to use a beach toy.

I suspect the motorbike was safer. Apparently you are more likely to be injured in a horse related accident than a motorbike. I never really got into bikes but have a horsehoe shaped scar to remind me of my riding days. Boats are much much safer option.
