We (I) put out a general EMail as well as notification on our website and Faffbook page prior to the first big blow forecast back in early December (?)
Advised that it may be wise to drop masts and, if using a boom-up cover, that if you didn't want to drop the rig, then perhaps at least drop the boom.
We've followed that up almost weekly and, to be fair, only a couple have gone over thus far.
'Securely tied down' appears as a condition in all of te insurance documents of my boats. "It was blown over in the wind..." - does that imply not secure and, therefore, un-insured?

Some of the boats down the lake had all their cemented in tie downs ripped up, the surrounding soil is so waterlogged, nothing holds.
Yet down at Hythe no problem and nothings tied down |

I've seen boats that were ostensibly well tied down manage to work there way over with a combination of water and wind. The worst damage I have seen has usually been caused by a boats own trolley with narrow bunks and pointy bits ready to poke through the hull at a moments notice.

Hey, why do half the photos look upside down on my ipad?
Only one of the boats I photo'd was tied down (loosely). |

How they're tied down and whether gunnel or cradle slung makes a difference. Gunnel slung, the tie down once round the mast is usually ok. Cradle slung needs to be once round the shroud, once round the mast, once round the opposite shroud otherwise it'll still go over......better still drop the mast on both types. |

Absolutely. If you can get the trolley to stay attached in its proper position should your boat work its way over it makes for a much less damaging proposition.
For the Finn I had two tie downs, one over the boom and one round the mast. Mostly because the mast was so far forward I had to hammer in extra tie downs anyway. For the National 12 I always had to consider the combination of light weight and surface area, as if the wind got under the rear it could flip it. My old sailing club has spaces along the lake edge above a bank which allowed for this and I even saw GPs being lifted by the wind. Dropping the mast definitely a good plan, a lot of windage and leverage there. |

Some years ago we had a big gale. We have tie downs attached to lumps of concrete cast into the ground. A wooden Fireball with its mast up blew over dragging its lump of concrete out of the ground which pinged into the air and fell down onto the Fireball chine.....which it went through. Dead Fireball.

My Tasar is a problem being so light and very flat under the stern. I have seen a picture, presumably from Australia of a devastated boat park with Tasars in the trees!
