The race is the start of a 1933 challenge New York Canoe Club Challenge Trophy (Team) Race, second oldest International sailing trophy after the Americas Cup. That was one of the great rule evasions of all time: for those who don't know the event was pre *International* Canoe and Uffa built two boats that measured to both US and UK rules. The US rules mandated two masts (hence the two ketch rigged US boats) and, I think, no standing rigging, so Uffa rigged the second "mast" as a rigid forestay with a jib on it.
