You need to help me make it happen. Give me an algorithm, I'd happily finance the printing and promotion of leaflets, and whatever other things we'd need to make it happen, website maybe. Although it would be equally flawed, there would not be the doubts of either agenda or buffer competence driven doubt that there is at present. Figures can't be made to lie, whatever 'they' decided to do after the event, there would at least be a firm base to fall back on which is what the current system lacks, they've messed about with it so much now, nobody knows where they are. |

One concern with the SJ handicaps is that they only seem to alter boats they have data for (or not, in the case of the Punk). So the Laser gets a 30 point boost, but the rarer single handers don't get any adjustment. That must make it difficult for gone Europes and Supernovas of the world.

Because all boats have different sailing characteristics, some boats will be suited to some places and weather conditions better than others. I would expect these boats to do well en-mass when everything suited them, otherwise, when are they going to do well? For these one-off races it might make sense to try and even things out for the boats unsuited to the sailing area, but for general handicapping it would be as silly as giving someone a great golf handicap because they decided to play using a tennis racket.

In my opinion, for whatever that is worth, they're statistically unsound. The RYA numbers are on a much firmer foundation. |

Good to see some big bold changes being made that avoid the inevitable time lag inherent in the "proper" PY system - take poinjts re this system being adopted in place of PY but given that it should be based solely on winter crowded inland Hcap events, the system may penalise slower more inland suitable boats when racing on more expansive sea courses. I did notice that, despite its only sailjuice outing last year being the Bloody Mary where she was sailed to joint 270th by Julian Pearson, my Punk boat has had another slip down to 1010 from 1012 - wonder how that was arrived at! Rs100 is same length, similar weight, 400mm wider on deck, bigger main and a dirty great spinnaker and is only apparently 20 points quicker. Roll on Graeme's VPP based handicap system* * Although I admit that would be at least as flawed. |

nice to see the D-One getting a bit of boost there. Not really any reason pro or anti the D-One, just good to see the myth that 'new boats get hacked' is just that, a myth.

Some interesting changes there and far more aggressive/bold than the RYA ever do ... seems to be working for these winter events. Is there anything that makes these changes not appropriate for general use?

I have to say the revised PYs being used by the Sailjuice Series do seem to be giving a good mix of classes and types of boats at the top of the scores. We also are not seeing the previous examples of class block outs suggesting the bandit classes have perhaps been leveled off a bit more by the Sailjuice PYs.
Does anyone have a list of the key adjustments they have made?

The Flyer was a great event and enjoyed by the vast majority. Decent wind and good organisation (once the results were sorted ... naturally
![]() The pursuit on Sunday was a riot but I'd prefer not to have the '2 race format' again ... In the 'slow' group we had many many more interactions with the fast fleet ... some of whom were impressing us with both their speed and occasionally abject inability (in a few cases) to stay in full control. It gave them a longer race but really compromised the racing of others - and more often ... Still enjoyed it but I'd go for the KISS 'vanilla' flavour pursuit next time. It is sometimes worth trying these sort of things .. even if only to find out their real practicality 'out there' ! Mike L (Icon 03) Edited by blaze720 - 17 Dec 13 at 12:47pm |
