The SIs seem clear enough to me. The first day all boats race all other boats on handicap, although there are staggered starts in which they will probably aim to have roughly equal numbers of boats in each fleet. On Sunday there are two pursuit races happening on the same course at the same time. Again they will probably aim to have as close as possible the same number of competitors in each fleet. Effectively a boat in the slow fleet and a boat in the fast fleet will tie for each place in the pursuit. Its actually rather cunning, and there's some considerable advantages to running a pursuit like that. The first thing is that because the fleets are split in half the handicap variation is halved and all the boats race for a much more even length of time so the effect of varying weather is reduced. The second is that the effects of weather that favours the fast boats or favours the slow boats is rather reduced. Giving it double points is rather neat, because, if I read the SIs correctly, it effectively gives the same points as if the whole fleet were racing together and they were tied for every place. So there are a number of interesting and valid reasons for running the variation on the usual pursuit system, and it means that this event is just a little bit different from the others. Remember no scoring system or race management system is perfect, and they all have compromises, even if some are so familiar we don't see what the compromises are. This one brings some different pros and cons to the party. Like the Hill Head triangulation, which was mentioned in another thread recently, I wouldn't want to do it every week, but for one event a year it brings an interesting variation to the game, and I applaud the folks at Datchet who thought it out. The pursuit is non discardable and scores double points. I expect to be watching from a comfy chair whilst drinking coffee.

I wonder why everyone tries to overcomplicate things? Seems pretty obvious to me. There will be one overall winner for the event. You count 2 of your 3 results from Saturday + your Sunday pursuit race result. It is only on Sunday when you only sail against half the overall fleet. |

I think you might all be over thinking this... in a pursuit, all the boats start separately anyway, so there is no need to divide the fleet. All the RO needs to do is have the results of the pursuit, then work out who is in which fleet. I assume a computer can do this in seconds, once the data is inputted 2 results for the price of one, with the fast or slow fleet result counting for the over all points. Sounds fair enough to me.

I guess I've got a couple of weeks before new year's resolution for being 'nice' about handicap racing kicks in.... So WTF is the point of a pursuit race if it isn't to race everyone ? Am I missing something?

So just to clarify, does anyone know if there will be one overall event winner who hasn't actually raced half the fleet they are scored against? Or will there be fast and slow fleet winners?

When is a pursuit not a pursuit - when it's 2 pursuits
Good that is clear .... but why only two then ? ![]() |

For clarity -
Datchet Flyer SIs - 13.4 - 'For the pursuit race, boats will be split into 2 fleets, fast and slow... There will be separate results for each fleet in the pursuit race'.
So, effectively, two pursuit races running concurrently.

My interpretation is that it isn't a pursuit race at all...the whole idea surely is to set the clock running and get the starts away...as already mentioned, when the clock hits 100 that's it - where you are on the water is where you finish...eliminating any further calculations.
Agreed this is gonna be a controversial outcome! |
