Everyone should get a result regardless of races completed.

If you don't do all the races at a nationals you don't get scored non-qualified you just get lots of points.

maybe at your club Gordon.  I know there was (don't know if it's current) a minimum number to get your name on the series sheet as a qualifier.

Personally it has never bothered me, but clearly it bothers some people... and it's understandable, being told you 'don't qualify' is usually associated with negativity.

Hi All
Sorry people are going off on there high horse again about nothing. To have a chance in most series you need to do a certain amount of races to not count a DNS which in a long series with lots of people doing odd races generally has a very high score, it used to be about 75/80% of races we are reducing this to 50% BUT you always counted as a qualifier even with one result and ten DNS. There had to be three races sailed by for it to count as a series.
Hope this clarified things.

We changed ours a long time ago. However, these days, with all the results being posted on websites using sailwave, it kind of just does it anyway, doesn't it? The results person puts the sailors in, and a table comes up with everyone on it. It would sem you'd have to actively reject people off the list who hadn't got enough actual starts for them not to show up, and wouldn't you then also lose their placings off it all?

So, yes, you need to have discards kicking in, but up to that point you would include DNCs. For a long, odd numbered series we use half plus one, and for even numbered ones half.

I would say this is a matter for a sailing committee (depending on their terms of reference of course).

At Hunts they have responsibility for all matters related directly to racing activities (but can refer matters to the main committee if required).

At Hunts we just decided to change it as a sailing committee and started scoring that way from the start of the next sailing year (1st March) so we did not affect the club championship results.

That's the problem with ideas... you talk about them in a closed group, get some feedback.  Sometimes it's not what you want to hear, but you take it on the chin and bin it off, because the person who has responded to you is trusted and respected by you, and at least they've done you the courtesy of being honest.

Anyway, let's assume the above doesn't happen, and the guys says 'yep, sounds like a plan' and your idea is through stage gate 1- the mates test.  Onto stage gate 2... the committee.  Maybe they're receptive, maybe they're not.  If it's bucket of water on a current fire fight, then it stands a good chance of getting an audience- and in the main these are good people trying the damnedest to do something in an environment unreceptive to change, often without the authority of a normal business type management or any real mandate to execute a decision.

Then you (+ a committee member) take it out to the wider membership... then all the pettiness and wants and desires and conflicts raise up.  Then you bin the idea off properly... thinking, frankly, it's not worth your time or patience.

You have a newfound respect for anyone on the committee, how do they do it?  But you've also gone away from the experience fairly convinced never try anything like that again.  Some people would say ideas are dangerous, in reality, they can just be a bit of waste of time.

I would say the other way. As said above our experience is that it has not affected turnout either negatively or positively it just looks better on the club website (you can see 20+ competitors in a series as opposed to just the 2 or 3 who 'qualify').

I raised it at the AGM about 4/5 years ago. Got no where. "Always been this way", "Encourages turn out", blah blah blah. Can't say I have tried very hard though, so ought to raise it again directly with the SC.

We used to have this at Hunts and I felt it was ridiculous so when i was co-opted on to the sailing committee I raised it.

The grumbling was that it had always been this way.

I suggested we do not change the 'qualification' criteria we simply allow people to carry DNC results in their series scores. The criteria is half the number of races + 1.

This may not have directly increased attendance or changed the overall results but a lot of people commented it was nice to see their results in there as they were not even published prior to this change.

What do your sailing committee say about this peaky?
