Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those that can't teach, become drill instructors. ![]() ![]() Love the Alto vid in your signature by the way. How many cameras did you have rigged on the boat? Looks like a fun boat although I'm not sure about you being out pointed by the Solo (?) at the leeward mark. Did you not get any grief from youtube for using copyrighted music in your video?

Thanks Kev
![]() 3 cameras used but moved them to new positions at lunch time. That was way back when we had only just got the boat (3rd time out?) so were getting to grips with it. I think as we came round the mark (dreadful rounding!) we decided to foot off underneath the Solo to get in to clear air quicker, rather than sit in dirt trying to point. No grief so far- all credited etc... |

Cheers. I might see what I can get away with through crediting then as the youtube music library is dreadful.

Aiming for a gap that only exists in your dreams is asking for trouble. A well sailed 400 could hold station all day on a lake. |

give me one of those pointless 'canting poles' and I reckon I could tickle them off station too. I remember a Burnham Week once where the talk in the bar was about the sportsboat fleet- they were moaning about the Bull 7000 that had a wing wang and decided to check it was working before the start as it had a tendency to jam up... it got interpreted as 'those idiots* in the topper' sweeping the startline clear. (* the word here was stronger, we were in essex)

Hi Bootscooter
You were on a pond, none of that lovely tide stuff to create the gap! Flat unmoving water, nasty stuff.Salty and bumpy lovely. Cheers Gordon |

I disagree. Yes boats can and do hold station well, but a gap will invariably appear. Through windage (on starboard tack you're not going to drift upwind unless there is a tide pushing that way. Yes, a right -to-left tide wide create a bigger gap sooner, but even on a pond it does happen, especially when anticipating a bear-away trigger-pull. On this occasion I got it wrong, whether through powering up too early or because of a lift just before the start the gap didn't open quite enough, but it was there. As I saw the gap develop from zero (RS400 right on committee boat) to the start (contact occurred not far forward of the shroud, so another 18" developing would have seen me clean through) the gap had appeared - just not quite enough. Unfortunate and embarrassing, yes, but not a ridiculous concept by any means.

I think your starting technique has to be different in handicap fleets to one design. Far better to approach slowly and see what developes than to rush in and hope there is a gap.
Certain boats behave differently in there start!!! The loss to leeward doesn't always make up for the speed of acceleration especially in flat water, a boat that knows it can't outpoint the boat to leeward is never going to want to close that gap early and is always going to want to get as much height off the line as possible and tack straight off!!! The boats that are likely to create a gap are the skiffy type boats with minimal rocker and whose foils don't work till they are upto speed, |

Sounds like you were categorically proved wrong at the event though, perhaps you are wrong to disagree?

Through use of the tiller, backing of the jib & main an RS400 could hold station all day on a lake. You were hoping for something that was only going to happen IF the 400 was not very good at holding station ... bit hopeful ... Next time you aim you boat into a "gap" that does not exist best to shout "yeehaaahhh" and wear one of these ![]() ![]() Edited by 2547 - 27 Nov 13 at 11:06am |
