I would suspect that all here that are racers will have seen and benefitted from the phenomenon that is the opening gap at the Committee Boat. As people rack up and slowly approach the line on starboard, the one direction that they will definitely not be going is left-to-right, as at very best they will be almost holding station, but invariably they will be making leeway...slowly opening that gap. Just prior to the start (almost) all will "trigger-pull", bearing away to gain speed, leaving a big hole for a well timed run at the line, shooting past the fleet and in to clear air.
In this particular case I don't know if there was a good sized lift just before the start, but the gap didn't open up. |

I agree about the gap opening. It works best when there is only a mark at the end of the line, though, not a whacking great committee boat, so you can bail out when it all goes horribly wrong!

Vans will often cost more than sports cars - it is a life style choice, not a financial one, in a situation like this.

My latest hiking dinghy probably cost around the same as a similarly aged soslow.

Actually I think my 1986 Lightning might be worth more than the 1997 MR2, but it's a close run thing....But the boat is Avocado green and the car Japanese version of British Racing Green so no contest really. Anyway I don't need a towbar - I'd go for the roofrack option, obviously. Oh and the MX5 might be a hairdresser's car, but the MR2 is a serious mid-engine sports car ![]() PS all the D1 bits and associated luggage fit neatly into the boat itself, leaving plenty of room for tents, dogs, sailing kit for all weathers, toolbox in the car (the Subaru!) |

Anyone want to buy a Porsche 924?
It is actually very practical - when I went on my Drill Instructor course I had all my kit for 3 weeks, all my uniforms, kettle, mini-fridge, full size ironing board AND mountain bike inside. Not much room for anything else, but I was quite impressed. Never fitted a tow bar, but there is one available. |
