and the fairly serious rowing kit.....thats not just a cruising Solo its got some real functionality for "raiding" - events where sailing and rowing are combined either by necessity through venue (eg broads) or rules (eg Sail Caledonia). Don't ask...

It appears to have some cunning steering ropes, so is that contraption at the back a seat for a disabled sailor? Not sure how they would avoid the tiller thudding on their head though.

Just a suggestion or two:-
1) the rowlocks (side decks) do appear to be oversized... 2) It looks like there is a stern well for an outboard as well as the oars - can you confirm? Obviously, it solves the problem of getting caught in stays, but how many bits of string are there? Surely the jib should be self tacking? Colin |

If the prime purpose of the jib is for control rather than speed - for example to enable the boat to lie hove to with jib and main battens backed, or to make tacking more certain and provide an easy way to get out of irons - then a self tacking jib would tend to defeat the purpose. And in circumstances where short tacking was required it would probably make more sense to drop the jib competely.
I suppose the ropes on the rudder and the other stuff might be some kind of foot stop or even foot steering arrangement for serious rowing singlehanded. At the very least I'd want to be able to lock the rudder, maybe with the tiller unshipped. Edited by JimC - 22 Nov 13 at 10:53am |

Really good sliding seat on this one, the box at the back is the foot rest so your feet are locked in and you can use the seat properly. The ropes are to lock the rudder, with such a short boat you wouldn't need to use the rudder to steer.
My old Finn was a really good rowing boat......a lot quicker than paddling. Padded thwarts would make a lot of sense if you were cruising and in the boat for more than a few hours. Drop the main and put the jib up for a nice sedate blow downwind. If you raked the board forwards it would sail fine with the the jib up |
