LOL  I know what you mean.... the trick is apparently sail a longboard with a centreboard, or NEVER sail out back for very long unless it's to get upwind!!!

Getting back to the topic of RS100s . . . . . !

OK, so there's a general view that upwind the RS100 is hard work, even with the 8.4 rig. But does anyone know how well the 7.4 sail works? You've got the same size spinnaker so the downwind stuff will still be exciting but perhaps the 7.4 sail can get you upwind without so much pain. I haven't seen the 7.4 rig. Does it look ok?

Best advice is to try one Vronny...  I guess it can be no worse than a 4.7 on a Laser.  Maybe Hanna is still following this thread and would comment???

Looking at the Rs100's I've sailed against, I would say where they struggle in our PY fleet is not upwind but on reaches. I would guess that making the main even smaller would worsen the tendency to hang on to the kite on marginal legs as the main alone would be too little power?
Obviously if you sail at some sort of W/L nirvana club it will be different from our FYC courses.....
I've only seen one 7.4 rigged, it looked very flat, so the power ratio may be more than just the reduction in area so to speak.
On a beat, our RS100's are starting to look menacing at times, particularly in force 2/3. These boats seem to be a bit of a culture shock for their owners, but they are enjoying the challenge I think!

It's as "hard work" as you wish to make it.  Simple as that.

You can hang & hope if you want, but it won't get you to the WW mark any quicker in a 100 than it will in any other hiking SH.  FWIW, as a completely biased happy owner, it's a whole lot more comfortable to hike and play the sheet & kicker on than the other hiking SH's I know of... Lasers, Solo, Finn, Blaze, Phantom, all of which I needed hiking pads / shorts to race in.

Try the boats you are interested in.  Pay lip service to what is posted here.

If you can't arrange a test sail easily, ask yourself if that's the kind of class you want to move into.

I agree with Getafix, you should try all the boats you are interested in before buying.  Any retailer worth their salt will have access to a demo boat of sorts.
 
As for Hiking hard, i dont get what the fuss is all about?   Sailing is a physical sport.  Its man/woman against wind and water.  Its no different to any sport.  I want to go faster I need to work harder.  If i want to get up a hill faster on my bike, then i try harder.  If i want to run faster....
 
As with everything else in life, you get what you put in.  Its no coincidence that the fastest sailors are the fitest people on the water.  The D1 is a beamy brute, but be under no illusion that you dont have to hike.  Sure you can get it round the course with your ass plonked on the wing, but to go as fast as the quick boys you need to 'Give it some salad'
 
I guess the main argument is around a boat missing its design brief and being too narrow for its sail area and as such you have to bust you banjo to get any kind of performance.  For me there is one answer, try them all on extended demos and answer for yourself. or use forums to understand owners opinions, but take them with a pinch of salt.

Agree with Getafix, and Ruscoe until his final paragraph. The RS100 was always going to be 6ft wide, with sufficient bouyancy and sail area to be a weapon in the light - which it is. The rig - and particularly the gnav system is geared around massive de-powering potential. and do not be shy with the downhaul. Another key point (actually reinforced by sailing a Solo - another fairly overpowered boat with a big centreboard) is to raise the board as soon as it "staggers" (another reason why the 100 has the board controls lead to the side), and ease the main. Do these things and hike hard (made easier by in my view the most comfortable hike around), and you can hang on to the shirt tails of a 400, not bad for a 6ft wide singlehander.

By the way, no longer a Director of RS, enjoying a bit of spare time, putting some effort into the club and sailing more, but missing the boys and atmosphere back at base!

Have to agree with Nick here.  I'm very average, and took me 2 seasons to get the hang of it, but improving my upwind technique and fitness, wellying the downhaul, combined with using the 10.2 so you don't feel the need for the kite on reaches, has worked for me, whilst I watched others give up.

I think 400 is a good comparison. An average crew double-handed crew, inexperienced with assys, would struggle in a 400 in F4+, I think we would all expect that, so no surprises that the same thing is true in the 100, it takes time to get right, and a bit of fitness...especially to get back in.
