I sailed two out of the three (owned them in fact), I guess I need to complete the Holy Trinity at some point.... anyone know how the Winter Series is going at Oxford... any chance the weeds have locked around their combi bases and they'll be stuck there for a while?

Anyway, where were we, ah yes, generalisation... asymmetrics, assymetrics, it's curtains for assymetrics.

deerrrr.... for the cosmetic carbon foredeck obviously, why else?

Bit of a speed difference?

But the vareo sailors seem to enjoy sailing their boats, so what's not to like?

I have never sailed an rs 100 so can't comment on that.  The vareo is much easier to just get in and sail than the D1.  The D1 is pretty easy to get back in to.  Just as well.

if you're going to try a D1 get used to the boat and the humungous main before you attempt the spinnaker.  That is not what I did and I swam almost straight away.  It's the big main that takes you over, not the kite.

James, I think the winter series is kicking off any minute at Farmoor and looks set to rpovide good racing and training.  There is a charter boat available for those that want to give it a go.  Plus we have a UK Europeans next year.

thanks Nessa - I thought it might be little premature.  I will bribe Russ to get a go in the demo boat and try my hand again... I'm unlikely to switch boats any time soon, but it's nice to know there is as least something happening not too far away which isn't just Lasers and Solos.

Yes sailed two out of the three boats vareo and the 100  and i found the 100 quite boring quite stable apart from that not that much difference really  was it quicker who knows i did not feel at the time it was any quicker than the vareo
Lets put it this way i never wanted to rush out and buy one cause it was the in thing like most people did.
Never sailed the D1 always wanted a go in one but thats never going to happen now.
Retired now after 35 seasons in a row and time for a rest.

Lol- no probably not for another year minimum.... If a fleet of something other than Solos or lasers presents itself and has some legs like it might stick around, I will give it due consideration, until then it's better the devil you know.

View from a very average club sailor, but I've done a few seasons in both Vareo and 100....pretty different IMHO.  In the Vareo I struggled to depower upwind in a blow and waves, but I'm pretty comfortable in the 100, even with the 10.2. The rig is so much more responsive and controllable.

Biggest diference is on reaches if you are going round the cans.  With the Vareo I found I was always switching between underpowered and slow with one-sail just bobbing along with the lasers, or fighting like hell if I had the kite up while the 200s sailed past in full control.

Same was a bit true with the smaller rig on the 100, but now with the 10.2 if it's a windy reach I just sail on the main and it holds it own on handicap, so way more fun.

Downwind, 100 is more of a handful, but so much quicker vs Vareo.  Most fun I think I've had in a boat has been in the 100 blasting downwind...it's at the limit of my skills, but great fun.

So Vareo was good fun and a useful training ground for the 100, but 100 wins hands down for me.

Better sailors may have different experiences...!!
