Ha as if, I tried to get dumb and dumberer to do that, walk into the sea with the boat on their head until I sailed away, surprisingly they refused, there were no other takers.

Your sailing at the wrong club we regularly help each other launch and recover in fact we carried all the MPS up the beach the last two years at opens.
Or is it just you they leave to drown and trash your boat? We normally only leave Wayfarers to help themselves as we all have bad backs from last time we helped one. Also applies to RS super heavy horror how can anybody make anything heavier than a Wayfarer? |

Dougal- it's the Hoot, it's reportedly going back into development in NA/Can after the innovator pulled the plug for lack of market... more on Sailing Anarchy and if you are really interested, hook up with the fella with the moniker 'Couchsurfer' as I understand he's taken over the project from the former developer... sorry I have no more info.

Oh yes - I do remember reading about the Hoot a while back. Thanks, I'll have a look.

- and inland waters plus slipways partly explains the popularity of single handers, but then it is the single handers who struggle to launch on shores without slips. I recall that, in the days of big 5'0h fleets at Felixstowe Ferry and Hastings, it was the launching and in particular the coming ashore that was the real fun; especially for the spectators! We always doubled up for launching and pulling ashore. But Graeme, while obviously a shorter boat will be easier to handle if it is lighter, other reason for changing from the AltO your bailers aree slow to remove the water and that the flaps leak in the water. Flaps do require maintenance and can have edge seals plus an elastic cord to release and hold them shut. Similarly bailers also need maintenance and should not leak if seals are good. I'm sure you also recall that your prototype Alto did not have the super-max bailers that are now fitted as standard. You also would prefer an open transom, i.e. I assume you mean double bottomed. Why did you move from the RS500 which has all this and includes a kite and trapeze! |

I wouldn't swap the Alto for another 500, they're chalk and cheese to sail, the Alto is much nicer, my issue is now crew weight and with that crew lifting and lugging it up the beach, we both want something lighter and easier to manage, we also find ourselves occasionally ahead of the main body of the fleet, which has trended to slower boats recently, whilst we can have a good battle with them when it's windy we can't do anything but go hell for leather if it's light in order to sail to handicap. So lighter and slower handicap is what is on the agenda and be in the mix in more conditions. (Which was the excuse our main opposition gave for giving up their 505 in order to sail a Merlin)

it sounds like you and they are being very sensible then... migrating to something closer in speed to the rest of the fleet, should in theory, tighten up your racing and provide a more rewarding competitive experience.
I wonder if you views towards PY may soften when you are sailing something less bi-polar compared to the main body of the club fleet? And another point, which you won't listen to... why not try the Icon in native format first? Just to see how you get on against that Merlin- especially as they would be giving you time on the spreadsheet. Hold on in there, maybe even beat them across the line and you win... no question.

I often try to understand my confused motivations, but primarily they are in order
1)For enjoyment - fun, no point doing it if not for the craic and I love that extra surge as the kite fills and you take off down the reach, three sails, up on your ear, wind whistling, spray blasting, watching the crew tea bagging along behind.. Come on, it's Nirvana. 2)The competition, but it's more with who buys the beer afterwards, than silver in the attic and that's across the water rather than what gets worked out afterwards, I honestly have no idea where we figured in the results this year, but we enjoyed every race, even the crap ones. 3)Sharing all this with new folk, now here's where it gets complicated, they haven't had a lifetime of the hollow championship experiences. So my angst is more for them and other folk who just don't get it, haven't been through the mill, experienced dinghyRYAdom and all the connotations we all know and tolerate, they just shrug their shoulders and have another beer and seriously would you want to even try and explain it. It's difficult enough getting them to realise that flying a kite into the pin end of an assembled start line isn't exactly cricket. If we are to attract more casual 'grown ups' who just about get what a golf handicap is and how it works (which is why personal handicaps aint such a bad thing) explaining to them the boat they sailed last year is now faster/slower than it was the year before because a bunch of folk in a room shielded by alleged 'statistics' (who said statistics were next to damn lies)have decided it is, this needs to be more transparent and more easily understood. Anyway it's the wrong thread for this discussion, my motivation is kites are more fun, lighter = easy access and manhandling and the results are very low on the priority list. |
