Has an asymmetric series ever been run? Interested to look at any turnout figures and what classes participated. Would it be something people would attend now if one doesn't already exist? All questions from random talks in the sailing club.

TASA ran out of steam i think Tom, it started off all guns blazing.  It was a great idea, but i think the organisers (who did a great job early on) hadnt allowed for how much time it was going to take up.

FWIW- one of the problems, or dissatisfactions with assymetrics, seems to be to expect an RS Feva to have a good race against a 49er just because they both have an uneven kite.    I guess if a series were to have several fleets- maybe loosely based on PY bandings or crew/trap format, it could work better... TASA seemed to run out of steam, not unlike most of the attempts to reboot asymmetric sailing at our club.  A lot of interest, followed by some crap weather which seems to deliver even crapper racing and then the boats go back in the reeds again until another head step ups to push it forwards again...

asymmetrics, asymmetrics?  It's curtains for asymmetrics.

Some of the more popular SJ events seem to run slow, medium and fast type of fleets don't they?

I'd go with that personally....

A fleet:

MPS/700/AC/49er/B14/800/Cherub '05 (Boss & L5k if there are any in working order still)

B Fleet:

Cherub 97 / L4k / RS500 / RS400 / D-One / RS100 10.2

C fleet:

RS100 8.4 / RS200 / L2K / Vareo / FEVA

If you can get enough boats together, then PY bandings will work, roughly, but you do need enough boats in each banding to make good racing, of course.

It does appear that the events which reach critical mass pretty much include everyone, and once you put limitations on it (such as a boat needing an assy kite) then numbers drop rapidly.

I'm pretty sure a 505 and a 49er will get a more meaningful race than a Feva and a 49er, bowsprit or no.

I say scrap the PY's and race people boat on boat, but catagorise them.  I would be happy to line up against RS400's 100's and alike in the D1.  Same as a 700, Musto, B14 canoe should be.  Every dog will have its day.

I thought the same, but thought twice about posting it as I assumed no one would agree with me.

You couldn't have said something MORE APPEALING for asymmetric racing if you'd tried.

WANT to race other boats , REJECT racing a stopwatch

ENJOY sailing assymetrics, DISLIKE racing assymetrics (currently)

We run an asymmetric fleet at Oxford Sailing Club, nominally for boats with a PY of 1005 or lower, although it is open to slower boats.  We usually have a turnout of 6-10 boats, with a couple of dozen different entrants in a typical series. We sail windward-leeward courses, handicapping is essential to cope with a fairly wide range of boat speeds.
