I don't know anyone who would ever consider dragging a dinghy up a shingle beach, this is NOT common place in the
UK.

The South coast shingle beach clubs have a culture all of their own - or at least the one I sailed at for the first and last time back in the early 70s did: an experience I am determined never to repeat.

Most shingle beach sailors that I've seen avoid dragging their boats as much as possible. It does happen occasionally but is not common practice. Most rough launches I've seen the boat gets lifted into the water by helpers.

We're not all like GRF  Wink

Fast (ish) Solos rough launch:

Gratuitous dragging, shocking. I suppose, given time it makes the boat lighter.

it was probably a company asset... he was just ensuring it depreciated in line with automotive and computing expenditure to not raise any awkward questions.

Standard procedure.. The Alto at it's first launch...

You can't get sentimental about a few scratches, whatever it might get on the way out, they'll be a whole lot worse on the way back and cheaper than a broken mast waiting fro someone to get the trailer

Dear Committee,

Please can we invest in a slipway.  Sailing dinghies here is sh*t.

Your faithfully,

iGRF (on behalf of the membership)

__________

Graeme, feel free to 'Basher' that onto an email.

Don't, you have no idea how long and how often I've whined about the lack of a slipway, we do have one but it's buried, every now and then after a storm it reappears, but we've not had what you could call a determined committee, bent on making launching and recovery easier for it's membership.

Not surprising the lake holds such attraction with it's simple single handed launch.

That Solo movie from 1985 could have been Hythe, but then so could the numbers of participants, we haven't seen that number of pairs of hands for many a year.

Common procedure???? LOL for you only me thinks.

Pull boat on trolley down to waters edge.
get some helpers to lift the boat into the water.
jump into boat centre board down, sheet in and go.

if you have no helpers, don't bother. You'll only get shingle in the slot (or something else will go wrong) and it will end badly.
