I must have the idea of a dangly pole wrong, I thought they dangled down from the mast, so could be gybed pretty easily, I've never used one, I've never used anything dangly.

so you want a kite that runs and reaches effectively? with minimal hassle gybing? is that about it?
so why not just have an asymmetric and learn to gybe it properly? (it really isnt difficult with good team work!!) and if you really must go dead downwind pole it out? or is learning to sail properly to difficult? maybe you should return to windsurfing or what ever it is you used to do?

The dangly pole on a jib can be, but the sail simply flaps from one side to the other. The kite has to go round the forestay, so where does the dangly pole go?
Maybe the big furling genny idea is better, but set from the end of the pole and made from the stuff the code zeros are made from on flash boats. It would only be used upwind in the very light stuff - after that, the boat is unarigged, but with a dangly pole could do all sorts off wind. The AC boats did this, didn't they? minus the pole, of course. |

The inner end runs up and down a line on the mast. A line runs from the jib tack through the outer end of the pole. down inside the pole where it emerges and is cleated. When you un cleat and pull it pulls the outer end of the pole onto the tack and secures the inner end on the mast. The more you pull the the more it pushes the pole out. If you release the pole then its inner end is pulled up the mast by a shock cord. They are brilliant.....but not allowed on Tasar.

Wouldn't expect any different from an old washerwoman still bagging her kite.

A dangly pole could go round the forestay too. It would be a very long pole though and need fairly delicate adjustment on the pole control. The technique/setup for hoists and drops could get interesting. Boom mounted jib sticks could get interesting, but before long you are into the complexity/insanity/setup/maintenance problems of pole setups anyway which rather defeats the object.

out of interest, can they be paired with a self tacking jib, and would the combination make single handing easier?

How often can that be said, hence wanting to get something done before a class gets established to ban anything that might improve (or devalue)their boat. |

Could you have two permanently connected danglies, one on each side and miles of string with two cleats? ............imagine pulling that down a chute!

The dangly pole on a jib needs no unclipping, GRF.
Jim, in my head I could picture a long pole starting above the jib take off point on the mast, so it could lift up and over, but it sounds like a solution which causes more headaches than the original problem. Or non-problem, depending on your point of view. |
