I'd have one at the drop of a hat, but sadly don't have the beans.

Don't suppose you fancy sponsoring a 6ft2, 80KG 14 yr old eh Rodney? (then I could pinch it every now and again )

Beans is everything but PM me! You never know, I might give you a chance to sail the boat of your choice

I look at the photo and still can't believe how such a good boat was made so ugly.

I remember seeing one for the 1st time at the XL Boat Show some years ago, and thinking "fugly", bit it's grown on me soooo much after seeing the boats over the winter last year at Oxford. Every time I look the 1st thing that hits is "quality" and then I see hints of Finns and OKs...... I think the off-putting thing for the casual observer is the "modular" look of how the racks are, but even this is sensible after consideration.

Saw one at the Steamer a few years back and thought what an ugly waste of space. Got to admit that it has grown on me. Looks great upwind like a Finn and pretty damn good offwind.
Everything I say is my opinion, honest

It is is ugly, but it is also striking - look at how much comment it generates.  It is ugly because we're used to boats mostly looking the same, having 'classic lines' and the D1 does not have that.  What you have to realise though, is that the good looks are sacrificed in order to allow a mere slip of a thing like me to manage an 11sqm fully battened main without the use of a trap, plus use a 15sqm kite downwind.  I don't think that would be possible if the designers had also focussed on looks.

Thanks to Rodney and Russ (who have put up with me nagging for about a year) I have been able to buy my boat for a shade under 6k.  With more and more boats coming into the country the used boat market will grow and hopefully it will become as achievable in price as it is on the water.
the same, but different...

You got one for under 6k? Seems like either great value or terrible depreciation, depending on your view of the transaction.

Does this mean you'll be concentrating on sailing a modern boat now, Nessa?

I got various discounts plus it's the old shape, which not everyone wants, but I'm mostly inclined to think it's great value.  There are few boats around at this price, and Rodney will tell you I was poised to pay a lot more.

As for modern boats, I just bought Pete Mcglashon's skol moth for fun sailing, plus Agamemnon arrived on the drive last night ready for his/her fitting out.  Plus I was only yesterday talking to Mikey about the date for next years CVRDA meet.  I just like boats.

Good to hear you aren't just going modern...

I have found that sailing the Lightning has cut down on my time in classics, though - just not enough sailing time to get it all in.
