What are you expecting this footline to do to the kite shape?

I like the sound of a 400 rig on an Icon, but it may be better on the MRX....
But as an ex 12 sailor, dangly poles on jibs, work big time.... Jon |

I'd go simple regular asymetric .. but look into the old original RS200 system that allowed dead running (cos the 200 is 'marginal' at best as a true asymetric or apparent wind boat). This was so effective on the 200 that 'they' banned it !! I'm told so it would have to be sailed like a true asymetric which was the positioning given it by RS at the time. Seriously it was so effective on the 200 that you would have only occasionally got downwind faster in many conditons and at many locations.
It was also really simple and easy to use. You would not use it as much on 'this' boat because it is that much faster but it would still be easy enough to apply. The spinnaker would not have to be large anyway whatever you might think now. As for putting a 400 rig on a Icon .... Ugh ! Far too big in the sailplan department and rather heavy thank you. It is not what the hull was developed to carry etc etc .... I've got a much better idea - put an Icon rig on a 400 and open a few eyes ! They really should have gone for it a while back imo. You really do not need as much sail area if optimised to go quick on a dinghy any more than you do on a board. Mike L. PS - This thread has really got 'legs' .... and will run and run and run now. |

I think someone did put a kite on a Tasar but the tacking mast and low tension made it slow. After completely sorting my Tasar and giving it a blast the other day I must say why bother with a kite?

As a trial, to avoid hull mods that will possibly need changing later anyway and to keep it simple.
As you a using a symmetric kite anyway why not give it try on the longest free pole you can accommodate down the boom set off of the mast. A turning block on each rear quarter, a couple of reaching hooks or twinners and a hoop on the mast and you'd be in business. It would keep the weight of the conversion down to the minimum also keep weight and engineering out of the bow. Reaching, deep or anything in between.

This sounds a sensible idea, if I knew what 'twinners' 'reaching hooks' and 'hoops' on the mast were without them sounding early twentieth century with no place here in the 21st.. |

I think it means "Stop trying to re-invent the wheel, and instead have a go at improving the bearings".

That would be fine except for the fact that this particular wheel is made of wooden spokes with a steel hoop, in a world that long since moved on to pneumatics and alloys.. |

Give Tom or Nelly a call at P&B... outsource the issue, ask for a 'Scorpion Twin Pole System'... spend your time sailing the EPS to improve boat handling, or ask Neal for a ride in that Miracle as an introduction to (proper) kites.

That's what I suggested. Upwind wise anyway. How much smaller is the icon main though? I don't feel the 400 main is too big, and with a more 'automatic' mast, bit more area might be the same amount of work? Jib could be smaller perhaps? |
