I posed the legality question to the association legal eagle, and his very prompt reply was:

There was some debate about this when the MicroCompass was first released, many moons ago! However, it was decided that its tactical display only provides information relating to the boat's heading. Hence it is legal and many people have used them for many years.

He went on to say:

I used a 70 degree tacking angle. However, it rather depends how you sail - high and slow or low and fast.

So, I'll set it at 70 and see how we get on.
I don't fully understand the 'resolution/sensitivity' bit, how does that work?

You need to check Appendix 2 item 1.3.6 Any compass, timing device or a combination of both may be fitted provided that it/they can only provide information relating to A) the boat’s heading and B) current or elapsed time.

I think when I sailed an RS we asked this many times and the tactics function was deemed not to provide information relating to a boats heading as it is providing additional information.

I use mine at 5 degrees and it works fine especially if the sea is a bit choppy.  In my opinion any shift of less than 5degrees is not worth tacking for (could be wrong of course)

It will give it down to 1 degree if you change the sensitivity. I have mine on a 2 degree sensitivity rather than the default 5 degrees and this allows me to change the tacking angle in 2 degree increments.

Doesn't the tactical mode only give you info to the nearest 5 degrees?
That's just wrong IMHO.

Need to check rs rules, not sure that strictly speaking your allowed to use the tactics function, only the conventional compass and timer!

I agree that it would make life a lot easier using the tactics mode and only having one number to remember. I have been playing around with mine on a 500 and unfortunately it seems to change a lot depending on conditions. I have had it as low as 74 in flat water and 12 knots going up to 80 when it gets lumpy and /or very light. It is all quite difficult though and I'm not sure whether I should bite the bullet and go back to the compass mode to make life simpler (and get the crew to remember the numbers for me!)

Dunno, not sailed with a Tacktick yet.
I thought the tacking angle was class specific, subject to minor variations due to stuff like conditions, technique etc.

Obviously one needs to suss the beat out first.
