I thought it must be wrong, it's the number quoted on the Noble Dinghy Database. What is the size of rig on a new rules Cherub? The Noble DDB says 15.5M2 upwind plus 21M2 kite (virtually identical to the Spice but over a 50kg 12' hull as opposed to the 85kg 14' Spice). I'd have thought the Cherub a significantly faster boat than Spice (much as I love my Spice) even in it's older spec. The Spice is on Noble DDB at 930 which I think is pretty impossible to achieve, in non-planing conditions it may keep up with the much more 'skiffy' Cherub but in a blow, not a chance. And, of course, in the lighter stuff the trad boats have the upper hand (especially upwind in big chop where the Spice is just a dumpy 14 ft boat).

975? Cherub py is 920 which is generous for a well sailed new rules boat. 975 is for ye olde Cherubs.

Not quite, the original ISO rig is smaller at 14.3M2 (Spice is 15.9). OTOH the North prototype ISO main I have is virtually the same size as my Sobstadt Spice main (the original Sobstadt ISO jib is a noticably smaller than my Sobstadt Spice jib). Another summer sailing the Spice (apart from 3 weeks awaiting a new mast courtesy of CraftInsure). Still loving it, out for a final blast last Friday, planing and twin wiring in F3. Magic. BTW are those Cherub boys 'avin a giraffe or what, PY number of 975,

I used to sail a Spice (323) with my wife. Not much good in handicap racing, but a real hoot in a blow. I actually taught my wife to sail on one, so it was also great for taking out people who weren't experienced.

Hi Stu,
Thanks, I've picked up on your new venture (good luck BTW) on the old Spice message board and if I need any spares you will be my first port of call. I love my Spice, if I raced dinghy's seriously i'd have to consider something else but for fun it's fantastic. Glad you're still enjoying yours

We sail a Spice too, and love it. Had several RS800 but have always kept the Spice. Also have the whole family of old topper boats, and can safely say that the Spice mast is actually a sealed and heavier mast compared to the ISO mast so might not be such a good idea to stick an extra wire on your ISO. Like Sam we have also sailed it with a combination of ISO and Spice sails.
Sam if you need any Spice spares contact www.vantagesailing.com who supply the Buzz, ISO and Spice spares.

Of course the rig's "similar" to an ISO, it's a Buzz with an ISO rig on it...

Six years late and I've owned and sailed a Spice for five of them. Conclusion? It's a great boat, (I'm sure there are greater mind you) I love it. I do a bit of handicap racing but mostly free sailing, singlehanded in F1-4 and two up up to F6 (though we swim a lot when it blows). I'm a returnee to dinghys after 25 years racing raceboards and don't have a regular crew so Spice's forgiving nature is welcome. As for underpowered, it's got 38M2 off wind! I use ISO main and jib most of the time (to preserve my one good suit of original Spice sails for handicap racing) and there's enough power to get you two trapezing in F3 upwind. It's durable and fun so if that's what you want buy the next one that comes along, it'll be cheap and you'll have a ball. BTW the rig is very similar to the ISO rig so I'd be surprised if the ISO couldn't handle two wires (I haven't tried it so at your own risk).
