the underside of a b14 is a Tasar. Possibly slightly squashed. But very much a Tasar.

Put a Tasar next to a B14 and they are alike. I have, but the Tasar lloks like a coal barge version by comparison.

Yeah, I get your point, but with the square top main, and what appears to be low buoyancy forward, deep reaches and runs in a breeze, could really sort the men out from the boys!! As I said, I hope I'm wrong as it really does look nice, but I would be tempted to forget the square top main, or put more buoyancy in the forward sections. It may work to increase the sheer forward slightly so that as the bow submerges, more buoyancy comes into effect, before the decks submerge. By no means am a boat designer, just built and sailed many different classes, and I hope you prove me wrong... Jon |

Nose diving behaviour seems to be very complicated, and its pretty clear that more buoyancy forward can very easily make things worse rather than better.

Jim, that's interesting, not heard that before, any chance you can explain further? Not disagreeing, it just seems to go against logic, but as I said I'not a designer, and can only go from experience... To my mind long pointy bows seem to want to nose dive quicker than blunt bows, but I do stand to be corrected...

Well, you can sort of say that nosediving happens when the hull stops and the rig keeps going. So is the hull going to stop faster if a big wide fat bow goes in the water or a narrow skinny one?
Solos, for example, will nosedive quite handily, and few folk have ever called them fine bowed. |

In the case of Solos, Europes, Lightnings and the like, I've always assumed the nosediving was caused by the proximity of the mast to the front of the boat, Lasers have extra length there, and are far less prone.
I'm sure Dan can tell us if Punk nosedives. If not, then fine bows are not intrinsically the problem. |

Yes, that makes sense, but, it would also make Mirrors/Oppies/cadets etc the biggest nose divers going!!! As you stated earlier, it is possibly more complex, and maybe I am being to simplistic.....

Nosediving has nothing to do with the proximity of the mast to the bow.
It can be attributed to a complex combination of factors Punk can get a little nosey in some conditions, but I reckon less so than a 300. If and when the bow goes in, it has always come up again and carried on. I have had some bigger bow in stacks in the laser over the years, as when it goes in it really parks up and trips over. None of these boats are like sailing skiff type boats and the pitchpoles, usually at speed from a trapeze, that can actually be bruising rather than just offering a deceleration or even a swim. A fair bit of technique can be employed to get around such phenomena, enabling the sailor to enjoy the benefits the rest of the time. |
