Unless you're just going for the "SCAT" joke, then not really, as it's been advertised in Y&Y and was exhibited at the Southampton Boat Show.

Mylar new rig? Not from what I have seen and heard. The new sail is dacron (but a commercially available cloth) and radial cut to help with stability.

Mylar is (apparently) not well suited for unstayed rigs because you have to stretch the sail to get the shape right.

I have a Banks Mylar sail on an unstayed rig, and it seems to work fine. I have the choice of a Dacron one, too, and ummed and arred for a while. I went for Mylar in the end just so people at the club would see the boat as more modern than a Laser! Now there is a radial cut Daron sail, my next one may well be Dacron.

Now we know why you can't get a new Solution till 2014....RS have borrowed the hull mould from Ovingtons and stuck on a new deck with some foot room! Shame they had to put a grands worth of fishing rod on it though..some of us like playing with the string Cool
When they say you are too old you probably are, but do it anyway.

The information to answer most of the questions on the forum is pretty much laid out in Martin's post on page 11 of this thread.

The boat is genuinely very light and that is one of the key differences to anything on the market.

The design is by Jo Richards and two prototypes are sailing.

The mast and boom are carbon round poles and the current sails have conventional luff ropes and are hoisted on a track. Personally I far prefer this over a sleeved sail. Whilst a sleeved sail is possible a tiny fraction more efficient (especially round an old aluminium drainpipe!), with current slim carbon masts its irrelevant and a tracked mast is much easier.

The mast is unstayed, so doesn't have an adjustable forestay per supernova/phantom etc. The depower comes from a flexible carbon mast and the fathead main which twists off or can be depowered by the cunningham - it works well. Controls are the usual, main, conventional kicker (Gnav would be pointless as the cockpit stops behind the mainsheet), outhaul, cunningham. The current sails are Dacron and as Martin says are three sizes. I was also initially surprised to see them in Dacron, but its very good Dacron and they do work well, stretching where needed. I don't know if Mylar will be tried, but it may not work as well on this rig.

The design is simple, clean and has clever inherent structural strength. In terms of laminate, it's following the well trodden RS laminate construction as used in the 100,300 and 800, all of which are known to be very tough and long lasting.

It is a very simple boat and not covered in loads of string so would appeal to a broad church. As the D-One and the RS300 show well, an unstayed carbon rig can do a lot of the work for you without resorting to a spiders web of control lines.

Its simple, modern, very light and quick.

The boat is still in development and may or may not be built, precisely because there are plenty of alternatives and it would have to be worth it. As Martin said initial testing is positive - but as I understand it, no decision has been made - so its a waste of time putting it on your Xmas list (for 2013 anyway).

So, is it or isn't it?

Is the only question worth answering.

Faster than a Laser?

And the answer to this question, is, without doubt. No, it's exactly the same speed as a Laser.

Then you PY it accordingly and live off the back of the Lasers new found Banditness.

There, I've done all the marketing you'll ever need as well.

Oh yes .. you'd better drop a note to BA ...

Anything with a dacron sail looks dated now ...
