On the night of the 1987 storm i went with my Dad to a talk on the then unnamed QE2 bridge construction and the now still born East London river crossing project.

When the speaker finished there was an any questions thing and someone there stood up and asked 'is there any chance the bridge would be closed due to high winds' to which the reply was a resounding NO - it was designed so that would not happen!!

Guess what happened today - and not for the first time!!

A massed effort at the club on Saturday. All masts taken down. lighter boats were turned upside down trolleys and all and then tied down.......No boat damage at this particular Sussex coastal club. The highest gust for the area in the last 24 hrs was 55 mph so I think we missed the worst of it.

The haul out rope did gather a few lobster pots (empty unfortunately) and was dragged several yards eastward. A couple of winch covers disappeared also.

Made sure my boat and the ones either side were secure. Was a little worried to see a number of boats with no tie downs though. Did what I could with them (moved to a more sheltered position) and spoke to the owners who really did not seem that bothered. Glad their boat is not anywhere near mine i the boat park.

I took the masts down on a couple of boats parked to windward of mine where there are no tie downs!

I was at the club yesterday and tied down 4 boats around mine that were left without anything.  I hope the won't mind that their kite sheets and mainsheets where used to tie them down  Wink

After watching the video from Mengeham last week showing the damage I have been to tie down my boat and everyone else's I could see that wasn't.

Our club was really busy today with lots of people and lots of spare rope....

Don't know about '87 again and all that, but I have been to the club and tied everything down nice and tightly..... Also put some new batteries in the torch.  You never know.

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else
