I did say a fair proportion of the blame, I didn't cop to all of it. Maybe we boosted the batten production Industry in our own little way, we certainly boosted laminate sail cloth production, giving the world Monofilm and Mylar prior to that to avoid import duty into the EC of woven fabric which drove sail prices lower.

The International Canoes started to adopt fully battened sails in 1949, influenced by the between the wars developments of Manfred Currey. Jack Holt was involved with the Canoe class at that time, and the early Hornet is not short of other Canoe influences either.
I suspect the boards had influence in helping bring production costs of materials down, and also in making it clear that the tech could be entry level, not just for the elite development classes who were pretty much universally (rule limited classes excepted) fully battened by then, especially those with Antipodean contacts. |

I think we need to talk proportion here before we go getting all proud about dinghy sailing having any part in it's own development in my revisionist thinking.
I wouldn't mind betting more fully battened sails got sold in the UK in one month than ever there were Hornets and Canoes built in all time. We (The royal windsurfing we) gave you RS, courtesy of the acquisition of RS by London Windsurf Centre and its later sail to LDC a successfull windsurfing dealer who probably even now sold more full batten windsurf sails than they have to this date full batten dinghy sails in all their boats. So... I'm just saying OK, not even asking for you to thank us.. Now back in your boxes everyone.. ![]() |

Frankly my dear .... er no won't say it so 'does all this matter' ?
The thread is fast becoming a pedants forum... does it really matter one jot whether class A or class B has a fully battened sail or not ? If it works for that class and the owners accept what they have got then what the heck ?! If you start getting off on the 'history' of dinghy sailing too much the thread needs the humane killer applied and quick .. imho. Step away from the keyboards now and nobody is going to get (their forum pride) hurt ...cos this is a non-winnable event ![]() Mike L. Edited by blaze720 - 21 Oct 13 at 5:11pm |

I would go sailing, but it is both getting dark and parent's evening at school in a minute, so I'll just pop a line in to say that everything in wind powered craft appears to have influenced everything else at some time or another.

Pardon me for breathing, I'm sure. Medway asked how come the Solo and Hornet had fully battened sails back in the 50s, so I suggested likely reasons.

Mike it's a forum, and as such people discuss things. By their Very nature threads go wildly of tangent. If you don't agree with people post a contrasting view. Just because some folk have differing opinion over how things devlop, history, different classes doesn't mean either you or them are wrong.
As for the highly annoying comment after every other post....it's now 6pm, I have a job that takes up most of my time it's pissing down and blowing a gale. So I will sit and talk about sailing rather then going out in a over canvassed fully battened sailing dinghy if you don't mind

Lot longer lifespan of a dacron sail might also have a something to do with uptake?

Hi Ruscoe
As you say it is a forum ... and tangential directions are the norm naturally. "If you don't agree with people post a contrasting view" ... er ... forgive me I was under the mistaken impression that is precisely what I was doing ... posting a contrasting view cos the thread was going a tad septic and around in the same repetitive circles imo. It was repeated several times previously that 'semi-soft' was possibly appropriate for some classes NOT that is was de rigor for all .. or better than fully battened or whatever. But then again I could have been seeing just who would 'rise' this time.... ![]() Mike L. |
