I once had a crew - albeit a relative novice - who asked 'Would I come back for her if she fell out?' Of course I would. a) The rules require it. b) I'm not quite that mean. c) I might want to ensure continuity of service. Although this was at Frensham - average 1.5m deep ![]() |

Somthing like this maybe ... We are always prepared to
snuffle around the web for (other peoples) ideas as a starting point ! This style looks suitable for a bit of modification .. maybe a bit more curvy though .... |

That's a bit harsh sin't it? Last time mine fell out he swam off with all the steering guff, wiggle stick an all, I had no choice but to let him back... I don't want to be counter intuitive here but isn't the joy of the jolly old icon its simplicity of layout, make them grovel about the scuppers if they're not otherwise engaged. One more reason to have a wire thing get the buggers out of the boat and doing something useful all that littering it up with water bottles, bananas and things they keep wanting to stuff in their faces.. |

A bit pedestrian for such an advanced boat!?

It is only a choice that has no compulsion attached to it. I do not use a compass on a dinghy but have no problem with those that want them.
I also go for grey hull colours. But I can live with some rather more 'vibrant shades' as well. We have supplied 'custard yellow' hulls for customers in the past (deck and hull !) and ... yes it is all a persoanl thing I guess ... Mike L. |

Sorry, that just looks plain wrong. The crew will get banned from sitting on it in light winds because it is too far aft, so they will end up crouching anyway.

Hi Rupert ...
You need to know Icon ... or be at the factory. It may be perspective issues at play here anyway as the 'gap' between shroud and thwart is just big enough for the crew... It is long cockpit on a largish boat and maybe you are subconsciously seeing it as say N12 length (Icon is not far off 15' !) ... you need to add getting on for half a metre+ for a start. The first photo might make it look too far forward .... while the third one 'places' it well aft. Besides the actual location is pretty flexible. It is being bonded in with polysuphide mastic on a pad and you could put it further forward or back - tolerance is there and it is partly customer choice . The pics look like they show a development plug just resting across the boat .. and remember a thwart is only an option for those who want one .... not standard equipment. Mike L. |

Well from my perspective the thwart does make the Icon a more desirable boat for a whole host of reasons. In actual fact I ended up with an Albacore because I needed a thwart, but also because I wanted to wait to see how the Icon shaped up as a class (unfortunately I have been burnt in the past by being an early adopter, so won't go down that path again).

It might be that the shroud base is a long way aft of the foredeck, I guess. I like the idea that it can be mounted where you want it - the advantage of parallel side decks?
