yep a lot of us did wimp out at Lyme. biggest I've sailed in and the waves were hugely confused due to the weather patterns that week. 4 sec between 6' waves followed by 10' waves about every third wave or so. us less great sailors found that a bit of a struggle at no point did I find myself in control downwind sliding all over the boat as I buried into wave after wave that I had little chance of steering around. the very good even said it was getting to the point of unsalability due to the waves. think most people in any class would have struggled. oh and we didn't sail on the Sunday because it was about a force 8 and the waves were breaking over the Cobb at low tide.
I'm not surprised that sometimes the phantom struggles in waves as it was designed for river sailing originally. and I don't blame Jim for wearing round. that was about a force 5-6 and sometimes a conservative approach pays dividends. |

nor do I, 'good seamanship wins nationals' reads well in my opinion.
(pointing out those events wasn't a dig at the Phant, just a correction to iGRF suggesting they are relatively easy to handle in high wind.)

Sailed a Blaze once. Thought it was complete dog. But that is always personal subjectiveness.
Never have understood all the rig changes either. First too big, second too small, third just right (apparently) but no, here now a supper big rig with a bigger mast which now seems to be too big so back to the old mast but and smaller Halo sail. To be honest sounds like it never was right and never will be for whatever the target weight range.

It tastes delicious, I understand. The breakfast small rig will follow in the spring. On the whole post, I am amazed what you managed to understand about the boat from one sail. All those Blaze sailors must be wrong. And as far as I'm aware, the Blaze has had 2 sails - the original Topper one, and the re-design, which is slightly smaller. The bigger rig for the Halo isn't trying to be a Blaze, or cater to the same weight range. You know, that Laser boat is a bit of a flop - they have used loads of different sails on that - never can get it right. |

Didn't they used to have a Sobstad sail? I seem to remember they were about as thick as a 40ft yacht genoa!

We had Sobstad sails built from the same material for our 30ft yacht if that's any consideration.
They also knocked up a set of N12 sails for me at the same time. They were worth more than the boat...

yep they did. a guy at our club still has one. has de laminated but it works still just found funny and fills with water when he capsizes in between the two sides. if only he could open a slot between them he could have two sails for the price of one

You can tell a lot from first impressions.
As I said personal subjectiveness. Just what I found. Does not mean other people wont find it different. Glad they do - hate to think think everyone would be as great at me.
To be honest though, when you look at the boat you think "This is well sorted out, hang on where's the kite?". But not having a kite is probaly one of the best things about the boat. RS "experiments" seem to have shown kited hiking single handers should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Yes the Laser is flop yet so popular - just shows how many sheep there are around. And once a flock gathers more sheep join them.
But I am guilty of being a sheep too so even my greatness can be faulted - My kids to me "Can we have a boat that looks cool?"
"Yes, lets get a pram fronted tub that we can have fun in."
"No Dad, you did not understand."
"No child, you do not understand that is cool in the world of dinghy sailing!"
"Dad, I do not want to go sailing anymore becuase my friends at school take the micky out of the way my boat looks."
