The problem is that at a major Laser event the measurers do not have time to do this. They have a very small amount of time to check a large number of boats. Say it takes 10 minutes per boat, 100 boats at the event = 1000 minutes (16 hours 40 minutes). There are probably only 2 measurers at the event that is a full day with no breaks and only allowing 10 minutes per boat.... I do agree there are ways they could phrase it but at the end of the day they are there to enforce so the attitude of 'sorry that is wrong, you need to change it before you can sail' (and a quick indication of what they can do if possible) is entirely correct in my view. Measuring is also done before the event starts so there is time to resolve the issue. I do believe at the really big events (euros and worlds) they do random measuring throughout the event as well.

I think most people agree with you Paul about the fact that they need to have it right before sailing, it is the way you go about it that matters.
anyway why can't the measuring be done with that number of boats? we had 86 at one nats and managed to weigh all of the boats as well, a load on the day before and the rest on the morning of the first day. if someone turned up late they did it after the racing on the first day, they weren't prevented from sailing though so that probably goes against what I said in the first paragraph. |

Absolutely agree with that. At the Worlds this year there will be 160 boats, and the Masters Worlds often have between 300 and 400 boats.
At the Nationals this year there were over 200 boats, but I didn't see a Measurer all week. Having said that, the Laser isn't exactly a challenging boat to maintain within class rules, which is self policing to a degree.
On the other hand, if a race official manhandles one of your kids at an event, that's a separate issue, and should be taken up with the appropriate authorities, in my opinion.

I think what we are seeing is an interesting social and cultural shift ...
When I first started competing perhaps 40 years ago my father taught me to follow all the rules and respect the officials. Had I broken the rules I would have taken my punishment and hoped dad did not find out. In the same way when I was frequently in the headmasters office at school I always opted for the slipper over the letter home as it was always better to accept the punishment at the first opportunity. Had my dad found out about one of my many transgressions which taught me a great deal by dealing with them myself he would not have gone bleating to his mates in the pub (there were no internet forums then) he would have backed the officials. This is similar to the problems teachers are suffering in schools, if a child is not behaving well there is little opportunity for discipline, and when a child is disciplined all too often they go telling exaggerated tales to mum & dad who then arrive at the school all guns blazing ... I think it would be far better if people could recognise when their child has been wrong and look to correct them rather than having a go at the poor official who has the unenviable task of trying to ensure fair play. Also remember the way a child plays back their experience of an official isn't always the full truth. It's time to back the officials guys or they won't stick around ... that said there are ways to do things and officials should always act in a courteous fashion and look to educate where time allows.

They're just not very bright really are they? The way to work, is to measure only the lead boats and bin them if they have a serious fault. That way the rear of the fleet isn't demoralised right from the off. Even we learned that windsurfing when they made us carry lead, the RYA's one contribution to windsurfing, Div 1, all that expense building a board down to 15kgs and the RYA decide you should carry 3kgs of lead, that went down well. Every board had to be weighed and measured to enter, took ages, impacted on the number of races held, folk stopped doing it in their droves, dinghy (moth)sailors got involved and cheated using the measurements to make bigger sails and built boards to the exact tolerances, it's why no racing boards are now built in the UK, the whole thing got canned. Measurers.. If you have them, they can be fooled anyway by the top guys, so in the end they are the only ones you need to thoroughly check. Edited by iGRF - 08 Oct 13 at 2:32pm |

In the Tasar Nats a few years ago all competitors were given the opportunity to have their boats weighed then the first 3 boats home were weighed if they had not been on the scales before. Winner of race one lost his points. 3 kilos over if I remember. Harsh but fair?

3 kilos OVER? The Tasars have a max weight?
If 3 kilos under, then yes, fair. If you are good enough to win a Nats race, you are aware enough to know if your boat might be under weight, and so check, especially if the chance was there, on a plate, so to speak. |

An interesting question is whether there's any excuse for a parent who helps their kid make a change on a boat that, at the very least, they should have found out whether was permitted before helping them make it?
And then, when pulled up on it, whether they should shoot the poor messenger who didn't want that most unpleasant of tasks in the first place, and has already dealt with 30 such parents and probably has another dozen to look forward to... |
