The Alto has a couple of them, they're down he bottom of the back bit, you have to tape them up most of the time or you sink, then when you have pretty much sunk you have to go back there and kick them open and waterstart out from under and they then let the water out if you manage to get moving.. ![]() edit: Merlins have them as well, though they don't operate as well if you're standing on the crews head on your way over the side.. ![]() Edited by iGRF - 08 Oct 13 at 11:32am |

I bet he is- although not playing ball and duffing cap to the golden boy for another year probably doesn't go down so well. Then setting up your own pro team, with a shock horror, intention to keep your own sponsorship money, with your dutch mate, (the enemy) probably didn't go down so well either. Not in the establishment. All credit to him though- the off the books wildcard might actually get a few freespirited windsurfers to actually give a sh*t and support him. Even some of us dinghy guys love a maverick. But we know the score- he won't be selected, so his best bet would be to use a year or so and his ass emigrated to somewhere without a decent RS:X contender- then meet up in Rio and stick it to them all- right up the ass, with Dorian in second and his other mate who makes up the acronym in third.

Education is the key thing here.
Same as when buying a car. You don't buy the first one you see and (if you have any sense) you buy one that you have checked the history and checked if it has been modified. Why should the same not apply to buying a boat? Some classes, the Laser in particular have very tight and obscure rules on certain things. The key rule to abide by is that if the rules don;t say it is allowed then it is not. For club level competitions this is not so important but if you are going to travel to Open, Regional and National Class events then it is down to you to educate yourself and ensure the boat is correctly set up. Plus put yourself in the measurers shoes. They may have 40, 50 maybe even 100 boats to go through and measure. They really do not have the time to have a discussion with everyone who wants to plead their case to be allowed to race because their boat is not right. I do feel the de-rigging to check the spacing on the numbers is a step too far though, as long as they look like they are in the right place and can be easily read then there should be no problem. If one is obviously 'wrong' (i.e significantly different from all the others) then it could be questioned.

It's more complicated than that, I can't say here I don't want to make things even more difficult for him. |

there's nothing wrong with applying the rules, it's the way you do it. why do it as people are about to launch? in the phantom we do measuring the day before it all starts then if something is wrong a polite word is had and there is time to sorry it out before the event starts. there is no need in any circumstances to be rude about it, though as a measurer you sometimes have to be on the receiving end of stick (not that I ever had though).
it does help having a certificate though, cos you don't get one without the boat measuring and you can't enter without it. mind you we only have a few hundreds active to choose from so it's easier to spot who doesn't have their boat measured up front. |

Rupertson has had the sense to join an adult class with no Olympic pretensions, so simply has to turn up at the Nationals with a boat that looks about right, and all is well. He also gets to sit around in the bar of an evening chatting, rather than do whatever 13 year old squaddies do.
And the little blighter sailed past me up the beat on Sunday like I was sitting still, and then stuffed me in a tacking match. I saw the future... |

and just think what he could do with a nice new sail. when elaine and i were helping him launch at the nationals, after his rudder problems, he did mentioned in passing how much faster he would go if dad would cough up for a new sail for his lightning......... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

We had swapped sails for the day! But I don't think that had anything to do with it, sadly.
He is now saving hard. |

i know nothing of class events and have never met a measurer but given its kids there no excuse for his approach not being "hey mate that cunningham's not quite right, watch while i sort it out for you so you can do it next time, lets get you on the water quick"
