Sorry to fill
up the forum with newbie questions, but I'd appreciate yet more of your time
and insight. I've found a line on a RS600 which is more or less perfect. The
seller has been very forthcoming about the various repairs performed to the
boat. However, to my shame, I know very little about hull maintenance. Below I
quote the two repairs which concern me the most. The seller describes the
damage and the repair. DAMAGE AND REPAIR 1: '...damage to the bow happened when...[s]omeone gybed onto port directly in front of me and I hit his rack. It made a rack shaped hole in the bow. I took the boat straight to Ashdown Marine. At the time they were doing most RS repairs and had the moulds for the boat. The repair is completely solid and invisible, you would not find it if I had not mentioned it.' DAMAGE AND REPAIR 2: ' I found a small (1 cm) crack in the floor and repaired it with epoxy and a few layers of glass. Cosmetically, it could do with tidying up.' 'The hole in the floor I only noticed a couple of days ago...I am not sure how it happened, most damage is caused by trapeze hooks, but this seems too low. It was a small split less than a centimetre long. I used a Dremel to take the surface well back from the split so there is no propagation of water into the core. The repair is solid, but the gelcoat appearance is not good. I am not sure the best way to match the non-slip.' Are
the above mentioned issues reasons to walk away from the deal? What kind of
questions should I be asking? Also, please note that I have omitted some
details to protect the seller's identity and that the seller has given me
explicit permission to quote him in this post. I can't view the boat before
viewing so am relying on pictures. Many thanks for your help. Peter |

At least the guy's being honest. I'm sure lots of dinghies change hands with much worse hidden damage that's never mentioned. But I don't think anyone on here will commit to saying "the boat will be fine, just buy it", without seeing it, or at least seeing pictures. |

These boats tend to be cheap to buy now, but a new sail is a lot relatively.So I'd be more concerend about getting a good sail than a few cosmetically dodgy repairs.
A point to watch is the back corner of the racks, mine were cracked around the welds, under the pro-grip. Good Luck with it, 600's are a lot of fun.

If it was repaired by Ashdown Marine I would have zero hesitations about the quality of the repair. Good luck you are about to learn a lot

The fact the guy is being so honest would perhaps make him a better vendor than the guy that mentions nothing ...
Any repair by Ashdown is as good as new.

From the description it sounds OK, forget about the pro-repair, Ashdown will have made it as if it never happened. The repair to the floor, if done as described, should be fine too, it's been done by the book, sounds like the only issue is the matching of the gelcoat, which you can always try to improve one.
Depending on the sail number it could be knocking on 20 years old, expect it to have some battle scars!

PS - just seen your post on the 600 forum with picture, my guess on the cause would be the daggerboard. I did exactly the same on my 600 in the same area, pulled the daggerboard up and while it was still vertical but clear of the case top it slipped out of my hand and basically lived up to it's name, and punctured the outer skin on the floor next to the case. I just filled it with epoxy and gelcoated over the top, and used a paintbrush to get the stippled effect. I kept the boat for at least a year and it held fine.
