Just been reading the report of the National 18's and their English Nationals.
Some classes sailed all over the UK have a Nationals and a Welsh Nationals and a Scottish Nationals, maybe even a N Irish Nationals. Some probably have a Welsh or Scots Nats when the main "Nationals" are in that country too. Is this a first, having an English Nats? And will other classes follow suit? Or should we, with the number of classes, and small Nats turnouts for many, be talking about "Class Champions", anyway, for less well attended events? In theory, I am the Minisail National Champ. This does seem a little over the top, having defeated only 9 other people. Class Champion sounds better, doesn't it? Of course, the 18 is a National class, so would be entitled to a National Champion, wouldn't it? |

well if you can have two world champions in the same class (potentially), I see no reason why you can't have the award for the best sailor in Little Britain.

Is this the same as why the RYA have RYA Scotland and RYA Wales, but don't have RYA England?

RYA Scotland and RYA Wales are mainly equivalent to the English RYA regions, with a couple of extra devolved powers partly to assist them in dealing with the devolved governments.

Dont need an English Nationals or English rya, we own all of the rest of the so called Great Britain counties so therefore a Nationals is English. I guess it's identity seeking, whatever next, a referendum on leaving the country England?

I guess the risk with having any "sub" Champs is of diluting the main event: how many people will not be able to justify doing both the UK Champs and the English/Welsh/Scottish wherever champs. OTOH I can easily see why you might want Scottish Champs as well as GBR ones if you are going to have the UK Champs in Cornwall and don't see many Scots boats making the trek.
OTOH, to be controversial, I suggest that some of our youth classes shouldn't have GB Champs at all. 300/400 boat events are just silly: I would think it would be much better to have say Southern England, Northern England, Welsh Scots and Irish Champs *the same week* and things would be a lot less pressured. |

It seems there's ten English regions in total:

That might be the case for the rya (I presume that's what you showing) but for a lot of classes I suspect it may be broken down into fewer but larger chunks due to the lack of competitors. Maybe along the lines of southern, eastern, Midlands, Northern, Welsh & Scottish. Certainly the phantoms do it this way. Each area has it champs apart from the Welsh as there are none in South Wales, and the northern part of the principality join in with the northern circuit.
The Nationals is for everyone though with the majority of the Nationals being in the south I suspect that not many Scots travel. If this is the case for other classes then it is almost as if the Scots cannot compete in the actual Nationals due to logistics so they plump for their own. Doesn't hurt with national identities either. |

indeed - do you recall Prescott pushing for the Geordies to become a devolved administration? I'm not sure what he was thinking.... must have been whilst he was choking up on his bulimic fish and chips regurgitation. Red Ed would be proud, not sure about his Dad though, he hated the English.
