No, but he plays for Man Utd/Real Madrid etc. America's Cup challenges come frorm clubs, not nations.

I can't help but think that if a nationality rule comes in, any chance of a well funded, viable, British challenge won't be happening any time soon and several great sailors will never get another go at the AC which their talent deserves. This regatta will never be won by underfunded enthusiastic teams and may be it never was, there are plenty of other events for those campaigns, so why not just enjoy it and celebrate the win

Perhaps it is more Champions League than World Cup, if that doesn't stretch comparions too far. If there were defender trials this would become more obvious, as SFYC (if that is who Oracle are sailing for) would have to compete against other US YCs to represent their country in defending the cup. I can't see LE being very happy about that happening, though... But there must be plenty of American talent just bursting to have a go, who are pretty peeved off with the team selection for Oracle? |

Given it is based on yacht clubs, my understanding is that any yacht club can challenge for the cup, regardless of location. There is only one defender, but there is no reason another US based YC couldn't have entered the LV cup as far as I know.
Edit: there were only 3 challengers from the rest of the world, so sponsorship for a 2nd US club was bound to be tricky. Down to costs again probably. Edited by Dougal - 27 Sep 13 at 9:20am |

I wonder if Messrs Ainslie and Slingsby have ever set foot in the club they just represented? I can imagine them propping up the bar on a Friday night boring all around them with tales of how they tossed a coin on whether to go for the left or right gate.
![]() The AC is the pinnacle of yacht racing, so it needs to be open to the worlds elite, where ever they are from. |

The nationality rule was only in for a few years and soon enough turned into a complete (but very expensive) joke. It was introduced in 1980 and by 1983 there was already the case of the designer who'd worked for both a challenger and the defender...

I seem to remember that just tank testing in Holland caused months of legal wrangling in those days, do we really want to go back to more lawyers than sailors?
Todays Telegraph carries the bad news that the UK is only likely to be involved if costs are reduced!

Exactly, like it or not, globalisation is apparent in just about everything, at least it gives our best a career path beyond these shores. Maybe it'll end up being a periodic battle of the corporations, either way, the good jockeys should start to make sums comparable with lamer sports like soccer, tennis, golf, baseball etc which in turn gives a rainbow path for our youngsters to at least aspire to.. |

That is very likely true for several other countries. Remember the French Energy team were close to building an AC72 and they usually have a better chance of getting the funding than the UK. Just look at the amount of sponsorship they get for their large round the world cats. If the French can't do then who can?

I think that like Formula 1, AC sailing will now offer 'cheap' TV exposure and thus advertising in exchange for sponsorship and a not very orderly queue will form to sponsor the big, successful teams. The game has changed and I feel cost cutting will soon be a forgotten aspiration.
