Correct, if they went for a tighter design so it was not so expensive you could get multiple entres from multiple countires so you might need mini 'trials' for challengers too.....

2 USA entrants would mean defender trials, which would be interesting.

But I guess that does spell out that it is a national event... now I'm in 2 minds again...

The difference between this and F1 is that the F1 World Championship does not go to the 'country' (as the Auld Mug does).

Fair enough use people from other countries in your design team but your design house should be in your country. Otherwise change the rules so the cup is not won by the country.....

You never know the Gates foundation might decide to come and play as well as Oracle giving 2 x USA entrants......

As for relativesd and grandmothers....it is a little known fact that Anna Tunnicliffe COULD have race for GB, instead she chose USA through these rules. I am more than happy for people to choose their representative nationality as long as they meet the criteria. (Mo Farah is not English remember but he was born here and grew up here and we label him as one of our greatest athletes).

Oh, and I agree about the editorial - we need more talking points, please!

Though maybe not to the SA model...

Tough one this...getting citizenship and passports aren't difficult to change someones Nationality - take the England Rugby Team, Manu Tuilagi is Samoan (his brothers play for Samoa) but plays for England...thus naturalised.

All we'd get is grandmothers rolled out, people qualifying by living somewhere for long enough, others suing over restraint of trade, and all that other crap. Better would be to treat it like F1, as has been said, and get rid of "team USA", or "New Zealand"as a title - Red Bull doesn't call itself "Team Austria", or Mclaran "Team Hampshire". And admit it is a billionaire's playground, not a national sp rting event. People will be suggesting it brings in an independent body to set the rules, next, rather than the defender saying, "my ball, my game".

I'm not that fussed what country they come from, but it would be nice if they could have some connection to the yacht club they claim to represent e.g. have done some club racing there at some point.

P.S. Great to see an editorial piece Mark!

But isn't the AC defined as a competition between nations?
