The boom bounces in the air when you tack, as the kicker isn't really used upwind. Mind, I got jammed under my Europe boom a few times when I got it wrong - the hull is more shallow than the bigger boats.
The rig was very tuneable, and to me well worth a re-visit if looking for a rig type more forgiving than the fully battened skiff style rig. |

Oh dear oh dear. I am definitely in the Amazonian category - 5'11", 85 kg as officially weighed at the Gold Cup. When I was a lot younger I ate and weighted lifted my way from 68 kg to 73kg so I could crew a 470. Height was a huge advantage for leverage and still is. I can tell you this though, sailing a radial at this height is no fun at all, I'd far rather be in an ice comfy Europe.
But in sailing Olympic success is determined not about size and weight and instead is all about attitude. Annalise probably finds the radial damn uncomfortable a lot of the time, but grinds her way round the course because she has the strength of mind (not body) to put up with the discomfort, plus the sheer will to win that gets her out there every day. If the average sized woman wanted to do that they could and would find a way and would do so despite the classes available to them. They would simply bite the bullet and get down the gym. An aside for tick: the Europe was a great class in this country before Olympic selection. The five ring circus changed it beyond recognition. The reality is that if the rya changed the status of the c2 the same would happen. Adults used to happily race toppers until it became a recognised class. Not anymore. Be careful what you wish for. |

I used to enjoy Topper racing. Even just a decade ago some parents would join in with thier children, rather than sitting on the side, and adults raced Toppers at club level a fair amount.
Has this gone completely? |

There's a member at our club who races one, I often wonder what happened to the countless toppers that used be sailing at clubs like ours- sailed by people who frankly didn't care for nonsense like optimum crew weight and the superiority of the Harken ratchet block.

the problem is, as ever, there are too many to choose from: lightning, streaker, byte, europe, topper, splash, flash, pico, radial, 4.7, and many more. The buyer will nearly always go for what is most readily available and percieved as popular. For me the best boats on that list are the europe, lightning and the streaker. The splash is a great boat for even smaller people. The europe is dying because there are not enough new boats, whereas since the streaker and lightning got new builders they are doing pretty well. The lighning was a revelation to me since her indoors got one instead of her byte - lovely to sail and comfy across the wind range even for me, whareas the byte was not.
There wasn't a mad rush to buy her boat, but the person who did buy it bought it without seeing it simply because they were so pleased to be able to get hold of one. There is no shortage of boats with standard rigs, can the class not find a way to make carbon rigs more available? |

and by the way, I think there should be a law against anyone other than a training centre buying a pico.

Oddly, I like Picos. I guess one of my few sails in one was on a lovely warm, windy day, with a planing reach the whole length of the lake and back, with the nicer sail on. I guess if it had been raining and no wind, I'd not think of them as nice now.

C2 rigs Nessa are only available from Nautivila in Italy because of misc. cock ups. When Ovis were building them rigs and boats became available at discount after Worlds, Junior Olympics ect. Now who knows? I am looking for a boat for a recent convert as we speak. I would settle for just a mast, we can sort the rest.
Lightnings do not have the dynamic sophistication of the Byte but they are lovely little boats. I sail one my self. Mine is de-thwarted and modernised. Of course the 'boy' has one but that is an altogether different story.
