she might be advised to consider the 49erFX, Nacra, 470 or RS:X.
The radial is a powerful boat, but as a test of racing skill amongst women of average weight it seems to have a lot of global endorsement. (It had 41 entries compared to 12 in the Eliot!) You can argue with the averages if you wish, but age is not a criteria for olympic competition. Just wait for Robert Schiedt to hit home waters in 3 years in the Laser. Or take Alessandra Sensini- she was 42 when she competed at Weymouth, in the RS:X class- arguably the most physical and athletic of the sailing disciplines. And finally look to the great dane himself- competing at 60 years old in the Tornado with his daughter.... c'mon tick, get her up the front of the Nacra with her old man steering, we'll all cheer you guys on!!! ![]() Edited by yellowwelly - 11 Sep 13 at 3:15pm |

There are not, and never will be enough medals available in the games to give anything approaching a reasonable representation of all the aspects of this highly diverse sport of ours, or to provide a reasonable coverage of the different sized people who may wish to particpate.
That being the case, there are two choices: a) to stop whinging and live with the fact, or b) keep on whinging and annoying everyone, and still have to live with the fact. |

Maybe we should all be doing RC Laser racing, to avoid these pesky physical disadvantages?

It is common sense that a woman's boat should be sailable by women. The Radial is, and I yet to be convinced that a 60-65kg woman can't be competitive. But physique will always win out on a dinghy when it is windy, that's just a fact of life. The Elliott is probably more forgiving... If it really is too big, the best solution would surely be to make the sail a fraction smaller or flatter, rather than introduce a new class? |

Well said Jim. The World is not a fair place. However I am as surprised that this argument has continued as long as it has. It indicates to me that this site is male oriented mouthpiece populated by rotund....(if I was GRF I would say, "ghey boys", but I am far to polite) men who require domination by powerful women. These gentlemen must be ignoring their machines of commerce or industry and I am guilty about causing the demise of the Nation. I am idle and retired but I must get on before the return of wife, 5' 3" 8.5 stone, sees me wasting my time. I give in. Please drop the subject even though you are all wrong....let industry re-commence!

Or maybe just race in lighter winds? Seriously, if you don't want the class to be dominated by the heavier people, restricting the wind range might be a better option than going to a smaller rig which lacks power two thirds of the time?
