I have only ever used boats with spinny chutes, I am looking as trading up my old boat at some point - either commissioning a new one or finding a newer well sorted one. Whats the pros and cons of bags versus chutes?
cheers in advance simon

Bags get the weight out of the bow of the boat (a wet spinny can weigh a fair bit) which helps reduce pitching. That and, in tide, a bag system will not flood the boat as a chute can (waves washing up into the hole).
A chute has the advantage in that it can be faster to launch and recover but with slick crew work this advantage is minimal (IMO).

Only old washerwomen use bags to put their wet cloth in (See B14 sailors)...

Bags also are kinder on the kite... so it lasts longer.
And I'm not so sure about the faster aspect of chutes. Mainly because I sailed quite a few boats and also seen many people struggle with bad chute systems. On larger Assys kites the system takes one hell of a beating. The masthead block blows up quite regularly. And you need to do things like strip the outer off your kite halyard to reduce the diameter where in contacts the blocks etc.. and getting a big kite back ALL the way into a long sock CAN be hell. I think bags aren't use just because it takes a little more crew technique. And on the whole I recon bags are about as quick ( poss faster to launch ) as a good chute system with a good crew. |

bags are fast (especially on hoists) if your crew work is slick. Other than maintainence though chutes (especially single string) are much more idiot proof (hence why GRF is wedded to them).

The day I find either a slick crew, or better still a crew called slick I'll tell *him about your wash bags..
*Don't even think about referring a female crew to such things, she'll rip off your manhood and use it as a spinnaker pole (Well she could with mine of course ![]() Edited by iGRF - 09 Sep 13 at 4:02pm |

cheers chaps. I mainly sail our miracle with my daughter. She has only been sailing and using kite this year and so the relative straightforwardness of our existing chute system is manageable for her. I suppose if we went down the bags route it would be a useful skill to learn

I have always been a fan of chutes but having just done the 24hour race and used bags properly for the first time on a well sorted boat I found them really easy.
The hoist on the GP I was sailing was one pull so all the crew had to do was get it out of the bag. Putting away I reckon we had more jams on the chute. I reckon there isn't much between them if the systems work properly. |

The bag on that GP rog, it didn't have the slogan 'every little bit helps' on it by any chance?
