There is absolutely nothing wrong with the act of racing a performance dinghy or board on a day like today, sun, freshening breeze, good competition amongst pals, the only thing that has ever been wrong with it, is ,as has always been the case, in the thirty odd years of organised competition that I've experienced, and that is from those that would organise, rule and create obstacles to that fun.

The euros were a predominantly windy series - whilst obv a great sailor, its fair to say that her results in the light aren't as impressive.

For a fit individual 65kg is a good allround weight for a laser radial, which I would venture is light for an adult European female.

I don't know much about the nacra 17 but suspect that there is a fair bit of scope for different size range for the female crewmember depending on the guy she sails with.
70kg is good for a 470 crew, 55 for a helm.
So to be honest, by the time that you have someone who can get up to 55 or another down to 70, the 5 ringed circus has plenty of range for the female athelete.

Height of course is nice to have, but not the be all and end all.
A guy called Karl Suneson used to run Robert Scheidt and Ben Ainslie pretty close back in the day at 5'8" he was dynamite in the breeze.

If you think that is true why bother with sailing, just measure and weigh the helms and award the prizes ... We of course know that there is a bit more to it than that ...

But did she win because of her height/weight or in spite of it? Height must bring with it disadvantages as well as advantages in terms of moving round the boat, maybe aspects of the ergonomics too: weight, of course, most certainly does.

Personally I've never worked out a reliable way to tell which factors were advantageous, and contributed to a win, and which ones were disadvantageous, but not sufficiently so to preclude a win.

I'd say that in 20kts and chop in a laser radial, being 6'1" and 72kg would be a delight. No trouble getting round a laser even at 6'6".
Wouldn't want to be that size if it was 10kts though. Esp downwind.

Delight? Laser Radial? Really?

I think the IOC should write her , tell her a couple of short arses on the Y&Y forum think she's got an unfair advantage and to (respectfully) consider representing the Emerald Rock at beach volleyball instead.

Just a mo, I deliberately was not personal about Miss Murphy she is obviously a skilled competitor and tall not that heavy for her height but her physique is not that of the average fit young woman that I am familiar with. I am pretty certain that the Chinese Radial Gold Medalist was of substantial proportion and I bet the rest of the top sailors were as well. It would be useful to compare ladies from the previous Olympic class (Europe) with the current Olympic class (Laser). I believe that John Emett said a few years ago that to be competitive in a radial you needed to be 12st. and did he not train the Chinese girl?

I wonder how you men would feel if the only Olympic single hander was the Finn? 

Sailing is a sport for everyone. We had about 20 boats out yesterday and 4 women all about 5'5" and, dare I hazard a guess, from 8st to 9.5st. My own daughter who is 26 and super fit is just over 8st at 5' 4".

It seems obvious to me but perhaps I have small man syndrome. We are a small family. I am 10.5 stone, 5'7" and 67, my three sons are all under 10 stone but taller. I am often surprised at how big you real men are but not women.
