Well, we know the RS100 kicked off not too long before that thread started, and we can probably figure out the D1 from that thread. If you know the answer, though, and can supply the dates, as you seem so sure, just post them and save the bother.
Personally, I don't really care which came first. If we could only produce the 1st of anything that came along, we would all be sailing something designed by Victorians, I'd imagine, as they tried lots of the ideas we are using now. Luckily, it is a free market. |

Err, a few things wrong here.
RS or LDC were actually involved in bringing. the first 49ers in to the Uk, but didn't get the manufacturing rights which went to Ovi's so not surprising they did their own thing. 700 was a natural development of the 600 Buzz, 3000 and ISO for that matter had all ceased manufacture by their original manufacturers before the 500 even appeared, so gap in the market. Don't know when Luca started the D-one, but discussions around a 100 had started long before there was any knowledge of the d-one. This forum commented a long time ago that there was even discussions between the two before they went there own ways into production. Tera and pico are totally different boats in different markets. tera is a more modern oppie. Will never displace the oppie, but most kids far prefer sailing them. They even look like a proper boat, not a wheelbarrow. Vision and Magno very different size and to sail. The vision is much bigger and aimed at the wayfarer and l2000 club boat market where it has been very successful (ironic that RS now also build the 2000). Magno is much smaller, think wanderer. Venture is very close to the Bahia and stratos , but the sailing schools wanted it. Built in glass so easy to repair and huge space to fill with learners Your last sentence is the most importance. They have to be commercial and pick areas which are new or where the supply is failing. However the important thing is they are still here and still selling and supporting every boat they have made, which i dont think you can't say about any other Smod builder? For the record I have owned rs's in the past, but none of my 3 dinghies are from RS so no fanboy tags please. |

correct- it was even let slip that another boat was potentially coming out when I was dealing with issues on my Vareo.... in late 2006. Apparently someone was interested in a 'sit down' 700... can't think who Simon?!? Did RS use this forum to shape and gauge market interest on what became the 100... yep, I don't think Nick even pretended otherwise. Did the fact that a rumour of boat from Devoti affect timings... I reckon it must have, the D1 launched first and there was dialogue between the two as mentioned. Anyway, here's a bit of reminder of some of the preliminary discussions between RS and someone with some good ideas... although AIUI, this proved to be simply a catalyst for a project that had been back burning anyway- re-focusing attention towards a sitdown performance kite boat. Finally, it doesn't matter. Both seem to be doing okay given the economic climate and neither has much to do with a rotomoulded beach cat for holiday centres and family pottering. BTW- anyone else here actually sailed a Dart 16 or one of the Hobie Waves? They're feckin' hideous... well done RS for offering something else, I hope it's better.

Story I heard was that its more a cut down 800. Certainly doesn't seem to have much in common with Clive's slippery little beast. |

I hear there will be single wire / double wire and with / without kite set-ups, but most importantly surely..... will there be a wood deck composite option I wonder?
Sailed an absolutely fab Unicorn once with lovely dark wood decks....only the brown murk of the east coast let the whole thing down when I inevitably tried to drink some of it after balls-up involving my first attempts to helm from a wire |

Without being negative about it, NickA, you're being rather selective. The 400 is a Merlin with an asymmetric. The 200 is National 12 with an asymmetric. The 300, though larger, took more than a little inspiration from Moths. And the 600 is very much a Contender competitor.

That's true of the design (chines etc) but the concept came from developments with the 600. Paul Bayliss was the orginal helm of the '600 with a kite' that was competing with the MPS for the origninal 'Olympic skiff project' He used to post here, even uploaded a photo iirc. |

The 400 is longer than a Merlin, narrower, wider under the waterline, generally not much in common with a Tales Merlin, apart from a vague 'late 80's/early 90's UK dinghy thinking' look about it. For sure Mr Morrison developed his ideas on Merlins. Likewise Clive's creations draw on his Moths. The only boat I can think of which is not derivative in this way would be GRF's V-twin. Do we think RS should put that into production? :-) |

It is even possible to see design cues in the V Twin - the Topper is in there, certainly!
